The opportunity

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Senior Research and Development Engineer for the Business Unit Transformers to join our Power Transformer R&D team, Vadodara, India. In this role, you will take on significant responsibility for the development and delivery of innovative products and technologies. You will leverage your technical expertise to lead key aspects of projects, ensuring that solutions meet the highest standards of quality and performance while adhering to strict deadlines and budgets. How you’ll make an impact

  • Demonstrate deep expertise in electromagnetic design, tools, and methods for power transformers; solve complex technical challenges and stay current through external technology reviews and benchmarking.

  • Provide technical leadership for transformer magnetic/electromagnetic design in R&D projects across concept development, simulation, validation, and troubleshooting.

  • Generate, validate and industrialize new electromagnetic concepts that improve transformer performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Conduct feasibility studies; define and justify technical solutions; and perform electromagnetic simulations using appropriate analytical and numerical methods.

  • Document and communicate results via clear reports, specifications, and technical presentations; contribute to internal learning programs and knowledge transfer.

  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing and testing processes; provide hands-on expert support to factories to resolve electromagnetic design and quality issues.

  • Collaborate globally with research scientists, technology centers, engineering teams, and technology managers; build effective partnerships with customers and academic institutions.

  • Drive development and continuous improvement of transformer electromagnetic design tools by defining requirements, supporting implementation, and verifying solution quality.

  • Translate technical outcomes into clear, actionable business recommendations; ensure results are captured, standardized, and shared across the organization.

  • Support the organization’s intellectual property strategy by contributing to IP reviews, preparing clearance documentation, and identifying potential IP risks and opportunities within R&D activities.

  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Your background

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering (or related field).

  • 5–10 years of proven experience using electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, Magnet, COMSOL) for design and FEM-based analysis.

  • Strong fundamentals in electrical engineering, computational electromagnetics, and circuit analysis.

  • Deep understanding of power transformer magnetic design, magnetic materials, and relevant testing techniques.

  • Familiarity with applicable international standards (e.g., IEEE, ANSI, IEC) related to transformers.

  • Working knowledge of CAD modeling software (e.g., CREO).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to handle complex technical projects, with documented proficiency in the relevant technical domain.

  • Strong understanding of business processes to ensure strategic alignment of R&D initiatives.

  • Proven experience leading technical teams and/or managing projects effectively.

  • Understanding of intellectual property considerations in research and development.

  • Willingness to travel to factories as needed.
