Job Description:

Position Summary

The Senior Radio Repair Technician assists the Radio Shop Manager with the supervision, operation, and repair of the City's two-way radio and related systems. This position conducts system analyses, evaluates enhancements, and completes installations and repairs of radio and emergency communications equipment.

Examples of Duties:

  • Assist the Radio Shop Manager in the operation of the radio shop, including planning and guiding the work of technicians.
  • Assist the Radio Shop Manager in the selection and development of Radio Shop staff members.
  • Install, repair, and troubleshoot operational issues with in-car camera systems.
  • Maintain and test emergency backup diesel generators that provide power to police facilities.
  • Write, edit, and program mobile and portable radios and applications using Motorola software.
  • Coordinate the work of staff members and oversee the installation, repair, and maintenance of two-way radio and emergency lighting equipment for the Police Department.
  • Monitor and tune two-way radio equipment using a system analyzer.
  • Train new users to operate issued two-way radio equipment.
  • Maintain the City's travel information system and multiple FCC-held transmitting licenses.
  • Test and troubleshoot resistors, diodes, and transistors in circuits.
  • Develop and implement ICS-205 emergency communication plans for catastrophic and special events.
  • Serve as back-up for the Radio Shop Manager in the event of absences or vacancy.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree and four years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Outlook, Excel, Word, or similar software.
  • Working knowledge of FirstNet technology.
  • Working knowledge of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System.

Physical Demands

Work Environment

  • In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule necessary to meet the City's needs.
  • May require evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have direct supervisory authority over staff on an ongoing basis but assists the Radio Shop Manager in planning and guiding the work of Radio Shop technicians, and serves as back-up for the Radio Shop Manager in the event of absences or vacancy.
