JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Radiation Therapist is an experienced clinical professional responsible for the safe, accurate, and compassionate delivery of radiation therapy services to patients undergoing cancer treatment. In addition to performing the full scope of Radiation Therapist responsibilities, the Senior Radiation Therapist serves as a clinical resource to other Radiation Therapists and members of the Radiation Oncology team.

This position provides advanced clinical support for complex treatment setups, treatment delivery, imaging, CT simulation, workflow coordination, quality assurance, and troubleshooting. The Senior Radiation Therapist also assists with staff orientation and training, promotes consistency with established clinical protocols and departmental procedures, and supports continuous improvement initiatives within Radiation Oncology.

The Senior Radiation Therapist works collaboratively with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nursing, Radiation Therapists, and other members of the oncology care team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.

This position does not have primary responsibility for formal staff supervision or performance management unless specifically assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Patient Care and Radiation Treatment Delivery

• Safely and accurately administer prescribed radiation therapy treatments in accordance with physician prescriptions, treatment plans, departmental procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Review treatment prescriptions, treatment parameters, imaging, documentation, and required approvals prior to initiating treatment.
• Accurately position patients and reproduce treatment setups utilizing appropriate immobilization and positioning devices.
• Demonstrate advanced proficiency with complex treatment setups and treatment techniques.
• Perform treatment imaging and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) procedures in accordance with established protocols.
• Recognize treatment setup discrepancies and take appropriate action before proceeding with treatment.
• Monitor patients during treatment and recognize changes in patient condition that require clinical evaluation or intervention.
• Promptly communicate patient concerns, treatment-related issues, or changes in clinical condition to the Radiation Oncologist, nurse, or other appropriate member of the care team.
• Maintain patient privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety throughout treatment.
• Provide compassionate and professional care to patients and their families throughout the course of radiation therapy.

CT Simulation and Treatment Preparation

• Perform CT simulation procedures in accordance with physician directives and established departmental protocols.
• Prepare patients for simulation and treatment planning procedures.
• Utilize appropriate patient positioning, immobilization, and reproducibility techniques.
• Verify patient identification, treatment site, physician orders, and required documentation prior to simulation.
• Assist with complex simulations and specialized patient setups.
• Accurately document simulation procedures and communicate pertinent information to Dosimetry, Medical Physics, Radiation Oncology physicians, and other appropriate team members.

Senior Clinical Support

• Serve as an experienced clinical resource for Radiation Therapists and other members of the Radiation Oncology team.
• Provide guidance and assistance with complex treatment setups, treatment delivery, imaging, simulation, and workflow-related questions.
• Assist Radiation Therapists in troubleshooting clinical and treatment-related issues and escalate concerns when appropriate.
• Support consistent application of departmental policies, procedures, treatment protocols, and safety standards.
• Assist with the orientation, training, and clinical development of newly hired Radiation Therapists and other appropriate team members.
• Serve as a preceptor or clinical resource for Radiation Therapy students when assigned.
• Provide constructive clinical guidance and support to team members while maintaining a collaborative and professional work environment.
• Assist leadership in identifying training needs, workflow concerns, and opportunities to improve clinical operations.
• Support the implementation of new treatment techniques, equipment, technology, and clinical processes.
• Provide clinical coverage and assistance as necessary to support departmental and patient care needs.

Quality Assurance and Patient Safety

• Perform assigned equipment checks and quality assurance activities in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Follow established radiation safety requirements and ALARA principles.
• Maintain knowledge of and compliance with applicable regulatory, accreditation, safety, and organizational requirements.
• Identify potential treatment errors, safety concerns, process breakdowns, or deviations from established protocols and immediately escalate concerns through appropriate channels.
• Participate in departmental quality assurance, patient safety, and process improvement activities.
• Assist with reviewing and improving treatment workflows and clinical processes to promote accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety.
• Participate in incident review, process evaluation, or corrective action activities as requested by Radiation Oncology leadership.
• Maintain a strong culture of safety and encourage team members to appropriately identify and communicate potential safety concerns.

Documentation and Information Systems

• Accurately and timely document treatment, simulation, imaging, and other required clinical information in ARIA or the designated Oncology Information System.
• Review treatment records for accuracy and completeness.
• Maintain appropriate documentation in accordance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
• Demonstrate proficiency with applicable Radiation Oncology systems, including ARIA, Eclipse, and other clinical technology utilized by the department.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational requirements.

Patient Education and Communication

• Explain treatment procedures and expectations to patients in a manner that is understandable, compassionate, and appropriate to the patient's needs.
• Answer patient questions within the Radiation Therapist's scope of practice and refer clinical questions to the appropriate healthcare professional.
• Recognize and respond appropriately to patient anxiety, discomfort, or concerns.
• Maintain effective communication with patients, family members, physicians, and members of the multidisciplinary care team.

Teamwork and Department Operations

• Collaborate effectively with Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nursing, Radiation Therapists, and other clinical and administrative team members.
• Assist with maintaining efficient patient flow and daily treatment operations.
• Communicate treatment delays, equipment concerns, scheduling issues, or other operational challenges to appropriate leadership.
• Assist with departmental coverage and workflow adjustments as necessary to meet patient care needs.
• Participate in departmental meetings, training, continuing education, and other organizational activities as required.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, dependability, and effective communication in interactions with patients and team members.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned within the scope of the position.

Work Environment

The Senior Radiation Therapist works primarily in a Radiation Oncology clinical environment and may have occupational exposure to patients with infectious illnesses, bodily fluids, radiation-producing equipment, and other conditions typically associated with a healthcare setting.

Required

• Graduate of an accredited or approved Radiation Therapy program.
• Minimum of three (3) years of recent Radiation Oncology experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience demonstrating advanced clinical proficiency.
• Demonstrated proficiency in radiation therapy treatment delivery, patient positioning, treatment imaging, CT simulation, and radiation safety.
• Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary Radiation Oncology environment.

Preferred

• Experience with Varian TrueBeam treatment systems.
• Experience with ARIA and Eclipse.
• Advanced CT simulation experience.
• Experience with image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and contemporary radiation treatment techniques.
• Previous experience functioning as a Senior Radiation Therapist, Lead Radiation Therapist, preceptor, trainer, or clinical resource.
• Experience training or mentoring Radiation Therapists or Radiation Therapy students.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Current registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Radiation Therapy – ARRT(T) required.
• Current Texas license or credential required to practice as a Radiation Therapist.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Must maintain all licenses, registrations, and certifications required for the position throughout employment.
