Job Description

FlexStaff is seeking a Senior Quality Engineer with Optics experience to join our client's team, a registered ISO 9001 company that designs and manufactures products for the military and aerospace industry. This position is permanent, full-time, onsite at their Suffolk County location.

Salary Range: $110,000-115,000/year

The Quality Engineer is responsible for implementing and executing inspection, testing, and evaluation methods to ensure that products meet or exceed company and customer quality standards. This role involves collaborating with internal teams, suppliers, and customers to maintain consistent product quality, drive continuous improvement, and promote a culture of quality throughout the organization.

Quality Engineering Responsibilities:

  • Participate in root cause analysis of product or process failures.
  • Respond to, implement, and follow up on corrective actions for internal, supplier, and customer issues.
  • Schedule and prepare Material Review Board (MRB) meetings; track corrective actions and MRB outcomes.
  • Collect, organize, monitor, and distribute supplier quality and delivery performance data.
  • Ensure procedures and work instructions are documented in compliance with corporate and ISO standards.
  • Evaluate potential new suppliers through audits or self-assessment and oversee supplier qualification processes.
  • Support supplier evaluation programs to ensure key characteristics and in-process controls are well-defined and effective.
  • Assist with inspection processes and ensure purchased products are designed for manufacturability.
  • Clearly define product quality requirements and identify key characteristics for First Article Inspection (FAI).
  • Prepare and review FAI and EIDP reports; improve supplier engagement in the FAI process to support product revisions and new product launches.
  • Maintain environmental lab testing equipment and perform environmental tests according to customer or engineering requirements.
  • Prepare and schedule test plans; provide recommendations, specifications, and data requirements.
  • Assist with environmental testing conducted by independent testing laboratories.
  • Perform internal audits and support the development and monitoring of key performance indicators (KPIs) for departments.
  • Operate and program measuring equipment, including CMMs, Zygo Interferometers, Spectrometers, and other precision instruments.
  • Conduct internal training sessions to ensure employees are familiar with quality procedures and best practices.
  • Perform basic incoming, in-process, and final inspections as needed.

General Quality Responsibilities:

  • Support and promote a culture of quality throughout the organization.
  • Help ensure that company quality goals and compliance requirements are met.
  • Understand customer specifications and assist in meeting their requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of ISO 9001 standards and help ensure compliance.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining clear quality procedures and documentation.
  • Monitor and report on quality performance using data and inspection results.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying issues and recommending corrective actions.
  • Provide input for training needs related to quality processes.

Additional Quality Support Tasks:

  • Assist with maintaining environmental lab equipment and testing processes.
  • Coordinate with independent labs for environmental testing as required.
  • Review inspection reports and support investigations on nonconforming products.
  • Support MRB (Material Review Board) processes.
  • Participate in contract reviews to address quality-related items.
  • Review customer specifications and communicate requirements to the team.
  • Assist with DMR (Discrepant Material Reports) and RMA (Return Material Authorization) evaluations.
  • Perform final, in-process, and source inspections of assemblies.
  • Assist with root cause investigations and failure analysis.
  • Support incoming, in-process, and final inspections as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with supplier quality management, audits, FAI processes, and ISO standards.
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools and equipment (CMM, interferometers, spectrometers, etc.).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work collaboratively across departments.
