Overview:

The Senior Project Manager accepts profit and loss responsibility and accountability for the execution of all project contracts and customer accounts as assigned by Alterman management. The Senior Project Manager is typically assigned to larger, more complex projects and carries out project tasks safely, at the highest quality and lowest cost. This position will have primary responsibility for leading electrical construction projects within the water and wastewater market, including water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, lift stations, process facilities, and related municipal and industrial infrastructure. The Senior Project Manager is expected to have extensive electrical construction experience in water/wastewater or similar process-intensive industrial environments, including experience with electrical distribution, motor control, instrumentation, controls, PLC/SCADA systems, process equipment, and construction within active operating facilities.

Essential Functions:

1. Account Management: 10%

• Takes ownership and responsibility for assigned accounts and ensures long term customer/account satisfaction, opportunities, and revenue growth.
• Develops and maintains relationships with owners, general contractors, construction managers, engineers, municipalities, utilities, plant personnel, and other key project stakeholders.
• Evaluates bidding, material buyouts, and negotiating opportunities of assigned accounts.
• Maintains effective communications with appropriate Alterman personnel, keeping them informed of all aspects relevant to the duties to which they have been assigned.
• Communicates with other departments for cross selling opportunities.
• Timely informs the Director of any significant problems encountered and provides recommended solutions.

1. Project Planning: 10%

• Works in conjunction with the Preconstruction and Project Support group, taking a proactive approach to project planning to maximize profit opportunities.
• Leads project kick off meetings and work sessions with estimating and support groups.
• Prepares breakdown of estimate to utilize the Labor Analysis Workflow (LAW) Standard Operating Procedures.
• Reviews plans and specifications.
• Ensures appropriate safety programs are initiated.
• Identifies project constraints, shutdown requirements, sequencing challenges, owner operational requirements, and critical path activities.
• Coordinates planning for work performed within active water and wastewater facilities where continuity of plant operations is required.
• Applies practical construction knowledge of water/wastewater and process-related projects, including treatment plants, pump and lift stations, electrical distribution, motor control, instrumentation, controls, and PLC/SCADA systems.
• Plans for project-specific requirements including underground electrical systems, temporary power, construction sequencing, shutdowns, tie-ins, cutovers, energization, testing, startup, and commissioning.
• Coordinates planning of electrical work with process-related scopes, equipment vendors, systems integrators, instrumentation contractors, commissioning personnel, and other project stakeholders.
• Plans work within active operating facilities to minimize interruptions to treatment processes and maintain continuity of operations.

1. Project Management (Office): 30%

• Manages assigned projects in accordance with Alterman’s procedures and policies.
• Completes project startup procedures, including:

1. Making projections, budgeting, and performing job cost entry for materials, labor, subcontracts, LAW, Packaged Alterman Construction Kits (PACK), and Direct Job Expenses (DJE).
2. Project scheduling for construction, material release(s), labor, and cash flow.
3. Interpreting contracts and providing input to proposed project team.

• Project Development:

1. Leads 25-50-75-90-100% project review meetings and prepares meeting documentation for small and midsized projects. Performs monthly project review meetings for large scale projects.
2. Prepares agenda and runs internal meetings as needed.
3. Establishes the project schedule of values for fix sum contracts and assists in billing preparation and billing projections for fee-based projects.
4. Prepares accurate job cost projections regularly as directed.
5. Prepares change order proposals and quotations.
6. Reviews, requests, or creates quotations and bills of materials.
7. Reviews and processes shop drawings.
8. Prepares major purchase orders while following appropriate pricing and scope evaluations.
9. Identifies cost and schedule trends and develops recovery plans when project performance deviates from plan.
10. Maintains material files (purchase orders, memos, quotes, shop drawings, test reports, action item list, field record drawings, etc.).
11. Coordinates with Purchasing to procure and coordinate delivery of materials to the project while achieving the project material budgets.
12. Arranges for the selection and placement of key supervisory personnel in coordination with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent. Evaluates performance of personnel and addresses deficiencies.
13. Coordinates with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent to achieve the project labor budget.

• Completes project close out procedures, including:

1. Addressing items on the punch list, signoff, final billing, retainage, collections, warranty, returns, closing purchase orders open commitments, finalizing record documents, final AHJ inspections, and updating project description and Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
2. Scheduling and leading project close out meetings and preparing close out documents.
3. Ensuring required testing, commissioning, startup, and training documentation is complete.
4. Coordinating turnover of electrical, instrumentation, and control systems to the owner.
5. Project Management (Field): 15%

• Completes project startup procedures including making projections and interpreting contracts and providing input to proposed project team.
• Project Development:

1. Attends on site project meetings.
2. Reviews actual field conditions against plans, specifications, schedules, and project assumptions.
3. Prepares accurate job cost projections regularly as directed.
4. Reviews and processes shop drawings.
5. Arranges for the selection and placement of key supervisory personnel in coordination with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent. Evaluates performance of personnel and addresses deficiencies.
6. Provides oversight of major shutdowns, electrical cutovers, tie-ins, testing, startup, and commissioning activities.
7. Ensures work within active water/wastewater facilities is coordinated with plant operations to protect uninterrupted treatment processes whenever required.
8. Coordinates electrical construction with mechanical equipment, piping systems, process equipment, instrumentation, controls, and vendor-supplied systems.
9. Reviews field changes and ensures cost and schedule impacts are documented and communicated.
10. Coordinates with Workforce Development and Preplanning/Productivity Superintendent to achieve the project labor budget.

• Completes project close out procedures, including addressing items on the punch list and updating Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

1. Oversees and provides support to direct reports, including Project Managers, to ensure that their job responsibilities are being fulfilled. Conducts regular performance reviews. 15%
2. Works with the department director to identify critical path activities of this position and prepares process documentation, when directed. If approved, ensures that other staff members understand the processes and can provide adequate support for the critical path activities. Reviews documentation on an annual basis and makes necessary adjustments to reflect current processes. 10%
3. Performs other duties as assigned. 10%

Education and Experience:

• Must meet the minimum requirements of one of the following pathways:

1. Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Completion or similar/equivalent, 2 years’ experience in a field supervisory position, successful completion of the 2-year Assistant Project Manager program, and 5 years’ experience as a Project Manager in the electrical construction industry.
2. Associate degree in Business Management, Construction Management or Construction Engineering and successful completion of the 2-year Assistant Project Manager program, and 5 years’ experience as a Project Manager in the electrical construction industry.
3. 6 years’ experience as a Project Manager in the electrical construction industry.

Skills/Abilitites:

• Proficient with or able to learn how to use Primavera, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Suite, accounting software, estimating software, and other required systems and software.

• Able to read and understand electrical one-line diagrams, control drawings, equipment schematics, and process-related electrical documentation.
• Familiarity with P&IDs and process-control documentation.
• Working knowledge of electrical distribution, motor control, instrumentation, controls, and process systems.
• Able to manage technically complex projects in active industrial environments.
• Able to coordinate electrical construction with mechanical, process, controls, instrumentation, and commissioning teams.
• Able to manage shutdowns, cutovers, startup, commissioning, and owner turnover activities.
• Able to identify project risks and develop practical solutions.

Work Environment:

• Office environment with some travel required.
• Regular travel to project sites is required.
• Position may require work within operating industrial and municipal water/wastewater facilities.
• Occasional work outside normal business hours may be required to support shutdowns, cutovers, startup, commissioning, or critical project activities.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to use hands or fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; must be able to reach with hands and arms. Manual dexterity associated with computer data entry required.
• Must be able to talk and hear.
• Must be able to frequently sit.
• Must be able to occasionally stand, walk, climb, balance, crouch or crawl, stoop, and kneel.
• Must be able to safely operate a vehicle to travel to and from job sites.

• Must be able to safely maneuver in a construction environment.
