Job Description

About Us

Biodiversity Australia is an environmental consultancy driven by a commitment to deliver transformative environmental and social outcomes. We are a team of innovators, problem-solvers, and thought leaders who thrive on tackling complex challenges and producing meaningful, lasting impact for ecosystems, communities, and clients across Australia. We are also proudly Indigenous-owned.

As we continue to expand our services across new geographies and sectors, we are investing heavily in advanced geospatial capability to support high-impact environmental decision-making. With a legacy that includes the assessment of more than 40,000 hectares of Biodiversity Stewardship land in NSW, our work is grounded in scientific excellence, cultural values, and genuine social responsibility—including empowering Indigenous communities and contributing to reconciliation.

If you are motivated by innovation, inspired by purpose-driven work, and eager to shape the future of geospatial solutions in environmental science, you will find an exciting and rewarding career with us.

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager - GIS to lead and deliver complex geospatial projects within our Geospatial Modelling Unit. This role is ideal for a highly skilled GIS professional who excels in project leadership, stakeholder engagement, and the development of innovative spatial solutions that support environmental assessment, land management, and conservation outcomes.

In this senior role, you will:

  • Lead, scope, and manage geospatial projects from concept through to delivery, ensuring high-quality outcomes and adherence to time, budget, and client expectations.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to GIS analysts and project staff, supporting capability development across the unit.
  • Oversee geospatial analysis, spatial modelling, and advanced data visualisation for a wide range of environmental and land management projects.
  • Manage data governance, quality assurance processes, and spatial database integrity across multiple projects.
  • Develop and implement innovative solutions using GIS technology, programming, and automation to drive efficiency and enhance spatial outputs.
  • Support field operations through mobile data collection tools such as ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123, and other digital capture platforms.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, mapping products, dashboards, and visual deliverables for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the development of tender submissions, ensuring high-quality, compelling proposals that align with client needs and organisational objectives.
  • Monitor, maintain, and report on budgets for your unit, ensuring financial accountability, accuracy, and effective resource allocation across projects.
  • Oversee or support drone-based data processing workflows using tools such as DJI Terra or equivalent mapping software.
  • Contribute to the development of web-based spatial applications using platforms such as Geocortex, AGOL, or similar.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging geospatial technologies, trends, and best practices, integrating new capabilities into project methodologies.

About You

You are a confident GIS professional with demonstrated experience managing technical geospatial projects and delivering high-level spatial products. You will also bring:

  • Tertiary qualifications in GIS, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Geography, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience with geospatial software including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS, and related analysis tools.
  • Strong background in spatial modelling, environmental assessment, land management, or similar domains.
  • Proficiency in programming or scripting languages such as Python, R, SQL, or Arcade Expressions (or a willingness to expand your technical toolkit).
  • Proven ability to manage project teams, coordinate workflows, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Experience developing dashboards, web applications, or automated processes within GIS environments (desirable).
  • Experience with drone imagery processing and spatial data management (desirable).
  • A commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and high-quality project delivery.
