We are currently seeking a Senior Project Engineer/Technical Lead - Energy to join our design team in the Dartmouth, NS office

Your Key Responsibilities Senior Project Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for planning, executing, and closing projects while leading project teams, managing resources, and ensuring projects meet time, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Manage multiple energy (Oil and Gas, industrial, renewable etc.) projects, overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from initiation to completion. Managing the approved scope, schedule and budget is the primary objective.
  • Define project objectives, establish timelines, and develop detailed Project Management Plans to guide planning and execution and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Assemble and lead cross-functional teams, delegate tasks, facilitate communication, and maintain team motivation and collaboration, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among team members from different departments. Motivate teams, resolve conflicts, and maintain a positive working environment.
  • Communicate regularly with the client and project team. Serve as the central point of contact between stakeholders, leadership, and team members, providing regular updates and progress reports. Ensure that parties are aligned on project goals, expectations, and changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide day-to-day project oversight and communication with the client and project team. Prepare and distribute meeting notes to the project team.
  • Develop, track, and update the project budget throughout all phases of the project. Develop cashflow forecasts.
  • Allocate resources efficiently, track project costs, and ensure projects stay within budget. Review and track contracts, invoices, and payments to contractors, consultants, and equipment vendors.
  • Monitor project progress against established milestones and key performance indicators (KPIs). Prepare regular updates and reports to stakeholders to inform about the project's status.
  • Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and implement contingency plans to minimize impact on project timelines and outcomes. Create Risk Register for regular review and monitoring.
  • Ensure that project deliverables meet rigorous quality standards. Implement processes for continuous improvement and feedback. Ensure that project activities comply with relevant laws, regulations, and safety standards.
  • Review change order requests associated with the project. Create and monitor a Change Request Register.
  • Implement quality control measures and assist in reviews and inspections with the Authorities Having Jurisdiction to ensure deliverables meet the required specifications.
  • Create competitive bid documents and negotiate contracts of parties involved in the project.
  • Evaluate, advise on and assist in resolving disputes and claims.
  • Responsible for conducting post-project evaluations, documenting lessons learned and ensuring that project deliverables are completed and handed over to stakeholders.
  • Mentor project managers and team members to build a cohesive and capable project team. Support professional development and career growth.
  • Work in alignment with Project Executive to develop business with existing clients and seek out new opportunities in the region. Existing client relationships are desired.

Technical Lead Responsibilities:

  • Comply with Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field.
  • Provide guidance and coordination to all engineered systems or products for a project and assuring work is reviewed for overall technical accuracy
  • Direct client project requirement meetings, project value analysis and basic cost estimating.
  • Participates in client/vendor/contractor meetings including HAZOP, 3D model reviews, constructability and design reviews.
  • Coordinates the preparation and coordination of project specifications and other related documents.
  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on projects.
  • Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the engineering team.
  • Work as a contributing team member within a multi-discipline team.
  • Understand and execute and/or direct work within Stantec's quality control guidelines
  • Manage and execute mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Establish and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Define and manage mechanical scope requirements including man-hour estimates, schedules, Design Basis document development.
  • Support the development of construction contracts and the tender/analysis/award process.
  • Execute technical bid evaluations (TBE's) for equipment.
  • Review/approve equipment specifications, datasheets and procurement support documents.
  • Review/approve mechanical drawings (isometrics, general arrangements, and P&ID's).
  • Develop and/or review/approve Construction Work Packages (CWP’s).
  • Develop and/or review/approve tie-in lists and line lists.
  • Coordinate/develop required calculations for equipment sizing, material selection, etc.
  • Stamp engineering calculations / drawings / documents as required.
  • Ensure appropriate reference material is utilized at all times.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong Understanding of industry standards and applicable ASME, CSA, API, ANSI, NACE codes and standards.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Ability to review and check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Strong consulting skills including ability to provide project status and results to clients through frequent contact and follow-up.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Employs engineering experience supporting projects from conception through construction.
  • Proven mentoring skills and desire to work with and encourage junior staff.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to write clear, thorough technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple jobs/projects.
  • Detailed understanding of project deliverables such as Process Flow Diagram, P&IDs, Isometrics, General Arrangements, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of various process equipment used in energy such as vessels, tanks, heat exchangers & coolers, heaters, rotating equipment (pumps and compressors), packaged equipment, valves & specialty items.
  • Understanding of material selection to support design of process piping and equipment.
  • Knowledge of fabrication and construction techniques and processes.
  • Willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ to support projects, clients and fellow employees.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use standard computer applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Engineering Degree (B.Eng.) with at least 10+ years’ professional experience
  • Eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in provinces across Canada.
  • PMP Designation is an asset
  • Field/site engineering experience is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Available for travel within Canada for short durations 2-5 days (as required)
