About John Holland

At John Holland, our purpose is simple – we transform lives with everything we do.

We’ve always known that infrastructure is about people — our customers, our employees, and the communities in which we work every day.

That’s our difference. Deep experience and capability with genuine care about creating better lives for people along the way.

Be part of the team that’s up for the challenge of transforming lives for good.

About the role

John Holland’s Queensland Building Business Unit is experiencing sustained growth, with a strong pipeline of complex, city-shaping building projects across health, commercial, transport and major civic infrastructure. With multiple hospitals underway, major waterfront and stadia opportunities, and key government partnerships, the team is delivering large-scale, high-profile projects that make a lasting impact on communities across the state.

Backed by a collaborative, high-performing culture, the Queensland business offers genuine career progression, exposure to some of the state’s most significant construction programs, and the opportunity to work alongside industry-leading delivery teams as Queensland accelerates into a major growth phase.

As a Senior Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of complex building projects across Queensland. Working closely with the Project Manager and site leadership team, you will coordinate on-site engineering functions for allocated projects to achieve time and budget objectives, while providing efficient and practical support for day-to-day construction activities.

You’ll be responsible for driving technical outcomes on site, managing subcontractors, coordinating design and approvals, and ensuring works are delivered safely, to specification and in line with program. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys being embedded in delivery, solving problems on site, and contributing to high-performing project teams.

Some responsibilities of the role include

  • Obtain relevant design parameter information for incorporation into detailed designs and construction specifications.
  • Monitor quality and quantities of incoming equipment and material, check work drawings, construction and specifications against site plans and conditions and arrange corrections or modifications where necessary.
  • Coordinate the activities of an engineering team, programme work loads and provide technical and administrative guidance to the engineering staff to ensure aims and objectives are effectively and economically achieved.
  • Ensure that project engineering completion is on time and within budget. Record completed work, costs incurred, materials used and retain progress drawings.
  • Manage on-site engineering functions through subordinates, which may include Project Engineers, and/or Cost/Planning Engineers.
  • Assign work and assist with reviews for accuracy and adherence to required standards of supplier, subcontractor quotations/purchase orders as well as subcontractor arrangement.

About you

You will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering, Building or Construction, with project management qualifications and/or postgraduate study highly regarded
  • Proven experience working on projects valued at $100M+, in a Project Engineer or Senior Project Engineer capacity
  • Strong operational and commercial capability, including cost management, value engineering and meeting budget targets
  • Demonstrated experience delivering projects safely, to program and quality expectations
  • A solid understanding of project management systems, including Safety, Quality, Environmental and Design Management Plans

You will also bring:

  • The ability to identify, assess and manage safety, environmental and quality risks
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to engage effectively with clients, consultants and key stakeholders
  • Experience managing and coordinating subcontractors and supporting broader team performance
  • Well‑developed organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities on site

What's in it for you when you join John Holland

We’re about connecting your sense of purpose to ours. We understand that your career is one of the biggest ways to have an impact on the world. We also believe in supporting you as a whole person, not just an employee.

We reward and support our people in many ways. This starts with being flexible about how different people like to work. From generous leave policies to wellbeing and relationship support, your needs sit at the heart of our employee benefits.

We offer:

  • Competitive remuneration with salary continuance, and salary sacrifice options.
  • Great leave benefits, including 18 weeks’ paid parental leave with super and up to an extra 18 weeks of super paid on further periods of unpaid parental leave, multicultural leave exchange, and two extra days to prioritise your wellbeing.
  • Career progression opportunities across an exciting pipeline of work shaping cities and communities.
  • Learning and development programs, including technical development, leadership pathways, and emerging talent programs.
  • A strong commitment to inclusion, diversity, and equity supported by business-wide strategies and employee resource groups.
  • Flexible working arrangements — flexi-hours, flexi-parenting, flexi-leave, flexi-shifts, and flexi-work options.
