Job Description
The Principal Project Manager is responsible for leading the delivery of complex Intelligent Infrastructure projects and programmes, ensuring successful outcomes across scope, schedule, budget, quality, and client expectations.
This role provides senior project leadership across technology-enabled infrastructure solutions, including digital, systems, operational technology, smart assets, and integrated delivery across multidisciplinary teams. The Principal Project Manager is expected to manage client relationships, oversee commercial and contractual performance, coordinate technical teams, and support the growth and maturity of Intelligent Infrastructure delivery capability within the business.
Project and Programme Leadership
- Lead the delivery of complex Intelligent Infrastructure projects and programmes from initiation through to completion.
- Manage full project lifecycle activities, including planning, governance, delivery, monitoring, reporting, and close-out.
- Ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in line with agreed quality and performance requirements.
- Establish and maintain robust project controls covering programme, cost, resources, risk, dependencies, assumptions, and change.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams across project management, engineering, digital, systems, and specialist technical functions.
- Drive proactive resolution of project challenges, including programme delays, scope changes, technical coordination issues, and delivery risks.
Client and Stakeholder Management
- Act as a senior point of contact for clients, maintaining strong and trusted working relationships.
- Lead client engagement across delivery, governance, reporting, and strategic discussions.
- Manage internal and external stakeholders across operational, technical, commercial, and leadership levels.
- Ensure client requirements are clearly understood, communicated, and translated into effective delivery plans.
- Support account growth by identifying further opportunities within existing client relationships.
Commercial and Financial Management
- Take ownership of project financial performance, including fee management, budget control, forecasting, revenue, cost tracking, and profitability.
- Manage project resource plans in line with delivery requirements and commercial constraints.
- Support or lead the preparation of fee proposals, project change controls, variation requests, and contractual submissions.
- Ensure accurate financial reporting, timesheet compliance, project housekeeping, and effective cost management throughout delivery.
- Monitor project performance against commercial baselines and take corrective action where required.
Risk, Governance, and Assurance
- Lead risk and opportunity management across projects, ensuring timely identification, escalation, mitigation, and tracking.
- Maintain effective project governance and reporting arrangements, ensuring transparency of delivery performance and decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with internal project management procedures, client requirements, contractual obligations, and quality standards.
- Oversee the production and maintenance of key delivery documentation, including schedules, action trackers, risk registers, financial reports, and project records.
- Promote a disciplined and structured approach to delivery assurance and continuous improvement.
Technical Delivery Coordination
- Work closely with technical leads and specialist teams to ensure effective coordination of Intelligent Infrastructure deliverables.
- Support integration across digital systems, data-led solutions, operational technologies, and physical infrastructure interfaces.
- Ensure delivery programmes reflect technical dependencies, reviews, gateways, approvals, and implementation milestones.
- Enable effective collaboration between project, design, engineering, advisory, and operational stakeholders.
- Maintain sufficient oversight of technical delivery to ensure issues, interfaces, and risks are managed appropriately.
People and Team Leadership
- Provide strong leadership to project teams, creating a collaborative, delivery-focused, and high-performing environment.
- Support the development, mentoring, and coaching of project managers and junior team members.
- Contribute to capability development within the Intelligent Infrastructure team through knowledge sharing, lessons learned, and standardisation of best practice.
- Support effective resource planning and deployment across multiple projects and priorities.
- Act as a role model for professional standards, accountability, and client focus.
Business Contribution
- Support work winning activities, including bids, proposals, presentations, and client engagement.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of project management processes, reporting standards, and delivery approaches within the Intelligent Infrastructure business.
- Support strategic initiatives that improve operational efficiency, delivery consistency, and project performance.
- Represent the business internally and externally in a professional and credible manner.

Skills and Experience Required
Essential
- Significant experience in project management, including delivery of complex, multidisciplinary projects or programmes.
- Experience in Intelligent Infrastructure, digital infrastructure, systems delivery, technology integration, or related infrastructure environments.
- Strong track record of managing project budgets, schedules, resources, risks, and stakeholder relationships.
- Experience in leading teams across multiple disciplines and coordinating complex delivery interfaces.
- Strong understanding of project governance, reporting, change management, risk management, and commercial control.
- Excellent communication, client management, and leadership skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and provide clear direction in a complex delivery environment.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organisational skills.
Desirable
- Experience in infrastructure, transportation, highways, rail, utilities, smart mobility, or operational technology environments.
- Familiarity with systems integration, digital delivery, data-enabled solutions, or technology implementation within infrastructure projects.
- Experience working under NEC or similar contract forms.
- Experience managing geographically distributed teams and complex stakeholder environments.
- Knowledge of project controls, financial systems, reporting platforms, and document management tools.
- Degree qualified in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience.
- Professional project management qualification such as PMP, APM PMQ, or PRINCE2 preferred.
- Chartered status or progress towards chartership desirable, where relevant.
