About the role

xAPI is Tesco’s aggregation and orchestration GraphQL gateway powering our online and instore customer experiences. It enables multiple client applications—Grocery Home Shopping (Web & App), Clubcard, Payment flows, Store digital experiences and more - to access consistent, performant, and secure data from across a set of enterprise APIs referred to as the Retail Platform..

The xAPI team works across the full lifecycle of platform products, solving complex technical problems, shaping API capabilities, collaborating with engineering and downstream service teams, and enabling endtoend retail journeys.

We are looking for a Senior Product Manager to lead the xAPI Platform team. You will own the platform strategy, outcomes and backlog, while partnering closely with engineers who contribute directly to core xAPI product work.

This role will be based from our London Farringdon Office

You will be responsible for

This is a hands-on product leadership role for someone who can move confidently between developer needs, architecture trade-offs, platform health and business priorities.

You Will:

• Define and communicate a clear product strategy and outcome-led roadmap for the xAPI Platform, aligned with the wider xAPI and technology strategy.
• Understand platform users, including xAPI subgraph teams, client teams, contributors and service owners, and systematically enhance their end-to-end experience.
• Establish success measures for adoption, platform health, engineering efficiency and risk reduction; use data to inspect progress and adjust priorities.
• Own, refine and prioritize the team backlog across platform capabilities, technical investments, operational work and contributions to core product delivery.
• Make evidence-based trade-offs across reliability, security, developer experience, scalability, technical debt, cost and speed of delivery.
• Turn complex engineering opportunities and constraints into well-framed problems, measurable outcomes, epics, user stories, acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements.
• Partner with engineering leadership on discovery, sequencing and delivery, while preserving empowered team ownership of solution design.
• Establish success measures for adoption, platform health, engineering efficiency and risk reduction; use data to inspect progress and adjust priorities.
• Work with program manager to Ccoordinate cross-team dependencies and contribution pathways so other teams can safely deliver changes into the xAPI ecosystem.
• Product Governance - Provide clear stakeholder communication on direction, decisions, risks, delivery progress and outcomes, including to senior leaders.
• Act as the product subject-matter expert for the xAPI Platform.

You will need

Experience relevant for this job:

• Significant product management experience, including ownership of a technically complex platform, API product, developer product, PaaS capability.
• Demonstrated ability to manage an engineering backlog that includes architecture evolution, technical debt, reliability, security, developer tooling and feature delivery.
• Communicating and Managing a Long-term Product Roadmap
• Strong working knowledge of APIs and distributed systems, including REST and GraphQL concepts, schemas, contracts, versioning, authentication, caching and common data formats such as JSON.
• Ability to engage credibly in technical discussions, challenge assumptions, understand dependencies and risks, and translate technical detail for different audiences.
• Experience defining outcome-based roadmaps, measurable OKRs or product metrics, and using evidence to prioritise and evaluate impact.
• Excellent discovery, facilitation and requirements-framing skills, including effective user stories, acceptance criteria and non-functional requirements.
• Proven stakeholder leadership across product, engineering, architecture, security, operations and senior management.
• Strong judgement and decisiveness when priorities conflict or information is incomplete.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to influence without relying on authority.
