Job Description

Are you ready to be a big part of something big?

CAR Group has been driving innovation and growth since the 1990s. Collectively, our world leading marketplaces bring together deep expertise powered by the best people, data, and technology across Oceania, Asia and The Americas.

We deliver world leading technology and advertising solutions designed to make buying and selling a great experience and are the parent company of wholly owned digital marketplaces in Australia (carsales), South Korea (Encar), the United States (Trader Interactive) and Chile (chileautos), in addition to being a majority shareholder of webmotors in Brazil.

With a vision to be the global leader in online vehicle marketplaces, we’re transforming how people buy and sell across the world. We discover new ideas and bring them to life. We continue to grow, and we continue to evolve - and we’re committed to taking innovative steps to get there.

When it comes to your career, we want to offer meaningful opportunities that empower you to make a lasting impact. But for that to happen, we strive to feel small - small enough to stay agile, learn across teams, and connect authentically with each other.

Our NEXT team focusses on building new, high growth businesses and features that aim to power the future of mobility. Working on unsolved and high potential problems with a start-up mindset at rapid pace to deliver growth for the business.

We embrace hybrid working combining the flexibility of remote work with the energy and connection of in-person collaboration. We champion flexibility and offer a range of policies and leave options to support your wellbeing.

What’s on offer

  • Recognition as one of Australia’s Best Workplaces™ by Great Place to Work®, a Family Friendly Workplace, a WORK180 endorsed employer.
  • A highly engaged, collaborative team where you’ll learn from exceptional talent.
  • 24 weeks paid parental leave for primary caregivers, four weeks for secondary caregivers, and six weeks paid gender-affirming care leave.
  • Regular hackathons, continuous learning opportunities, and wellbeing initiatives that support your mental, emotional, and physical health.

What you’ll be doing

As the Senior Product Manager in our NEXT team, you’ll lead the discovery of the group’s next big bets. You’ll explore opportunities, prove which ones have value, and develop products that create value for buyers, sellers and the business. Each day will be different, but you’ll spend your time:

  • Leading discovery of new business opportunities - spotting unsolved, high-potential problems across our marketplaces.
  • Proving what’s real, fast- designing and running experiments, tests and pilots with real users to kill weak ideas early and validate the ones worth pursuing.
  • Turning data into decisions - interpreting user and market signals and drawing clear, actionable insights that define our bets.
  • Using AI to move faster- harnessing AI to find and test new business models faster, from rapid prototyping to AI-native product experiences.
  • Balancing both sides of the marketplace- improving the experience for buyers while creating real value for sellers and dealers.
  • Building the partnerships that make it happen - forging win-win relationships with third parties, vendors and partners to execute at pace.
  • Making the case to the top- defining a compelling product vision and strategy then pitching it to our most senior stakeholders to win the backing and funding to scale.

Qualifications

What we’re looking for

You’re a hands-on product leader who has taken an idea and made it real. You thrive in ambiguity, love hard problems, and use data to pressure-test your instincts. You’ll thrive here if:

  • You’ve built products from scratch - ideally taking at least one product or business from zero to launch in a startup, incubator or internal zero-to-one team.
  • You use AI as a product tool - you’ve shipped AI/ML-powered products, or used AI to accelerate discovery, prototyping and decision-making.
  • You’ve challenged the status quo and shipped the better version - you don’t accept “that’s how it’s always been done.”
  • You have a deep product toolkit and a bias for action - you know which framework, process or tool fits which job, and when to skip all three.
  • You’re a clear, persuasive communicator - comfortable with fast pace, rapid change and ambiguity.
  • You influence beyond your own squad - a track record of getting cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders aligned around a vision.

Bonus points if you have automotive, marketplace or two-sided platform experience - but if you don’t tick every box and think you’d be great in this role, we’d still love to hear from you.

About carsales

At carsales, we’re all about making buying and selling a great experience. For over 25 years we’ve been evolving with the new economy to help people choose how they move today and tomorrow.

We started out with the idea of digitising print classifieds back in 1997 when we thought that ‘this internet thing might actually be starting to take off’. Fast forward to today and we have close to 800 team members across Australia and New Zealand and we’re part of CAR Group - an ASX 50 business and a global leader in digital marketplaces across Oceania, Asia and The Americas.

And don’t let our name fool you – we might have the word “car” in there, but we’re about so much more....

When it comes to your career, we want to provide big opportunities to help you make a big impact. But for this to be possible, we strive to feel small. Small enough to quickly change tack, small enough to learn from different departments and small enough to connect authentically with leadership.

Not something you’d expect from one of the country’s biggest tech companies, is it?

There are a lot of things to love about carsales. Our uniqueness comes from having the rare combination of being able to provide all the benefits of a big tech company – being growth, security and resource – coupled with the feeling of a small organisation, which gives agility, opportunity and autonomy to our people. We’re a place where you can truly move your career forward and we’re proud to offer a dynamic workplace experience which transcends a mere list of perks and benefits.

Our people are Software Developers. Engineers. Product Managers. Data Analysts. Designers. Sales, Media and Advertising specialists. Researchers. Customer Service stars. Content Producers. Finance experts. Photographers. Marketing magicians. Legal eagles. And People and Culture peeps.
