Tango is changing how it builds software, and we are forming a team around one premise: an engineer with strong fundamentals and real AI leverage can own a feature across backend, web, Android and iOS, together with the automated tests that cover all of it, end to end - and ship it at the scale we run, where parts of the platform peak atм50k RPS.

How the team works

Each platform team maintains the tooling, conventions and test setup for its own surface, and maintains them specifically so that one engineer can work across all of them without being an expert in each. You get frontier coding agents and IDEs, internal agents and MCP servers over our own systems, and review tooling built against our codebases. There is time and budget to evaluate new tools, and we adopt and drop them quickly.

A feature starts as a goal, not a ticket. You decide with the product manager what is worth building, and then you build it.

Product Engineer is a new role at Tango and this is the first hire, so the workflows and guardrails for agentic development here have not been written yet. You will write them, and share them with the wider engineering organisation.

You will not do this alone. Domain experts in backend, platform, infrastructure, data, web, Android and iOS are there to be asked.

Responsibilities

• Work as an AI-leveraged engineer. Decompose goals into well-scoped work for coding agents, run that work across surfaces that are new to you, and stay accountable for everything that lands in the repository under your name.
• Shape the problem. With the product manager, turn a goal into a solution: question the proposed approach, offer alternatives, and say what to leave out.
• Design under real constraints. Scale, latency, cost and mobile behaviour, and show how the numbers led to the design.
• Build the whole feature. Backend services, web, Android and iOS, using the AI tooling andconventions each platform team maintains.
• Own the quality. Write the automated tests that cover your feature on each surface you touched, on our existing test platform, and handle the edge cases rather than leaving them to be found later.
• Ship it and measure it. Roll out, watch it in production, and report what actually changed for users.

Requirements

AI-enabled development - the part that matters most

• Daily, hands-on use of AI coding agents in real production work, not in side experiments
• Ability to break engineering goals into clear, well-scoped tasks for agents, and the judgement to recognise when an agent is the wrong tool for the job
• Strong awareness of the risks and limitations of AI-generated software
• Real curiosity about where this is going: new tools, new workflows, better ways to evaluate what agents produce

Comfortable across stacks

• You work in more than one stack and are happy to. Backend is where you are strongest; the same feature will need web, Android, iOS and the tests that cover them, and all of it is yours
• You have picked up an unfamiliar language, framework or platform on the job and shipped in it

Engineering depth

• 5+ years of professional software engineering, preferably backend, on products with real users
• Experience designing and operating high-load distributed systems, and the ability to talk concretely about the traffic you carried and the numbers behind your decisions
• Strong computer science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, concurrency, andperformance
• Practical experience with microservices, REST APIs and clear service boundaries in production
• Judgement about storage and asynchronous design: choosing between relational, non-relational and caching layers, and knowing what each choice costs you later
• English proficiency at Intermediate level or higher

Product ownership

• You are comfortable owning a feature end to end: design, implementation, tests, rollout, and the result
• You have worked somewhere you lived with what you shipped, rather than handing it over at the end
• Direct, easy collaboration with product managers and designers

Would be great to have

• Building or improving agentic workflows: custom agents, MCP servers, evaluation harnesses, context engineering, and sharing what works with other engineers
• Java 17+ and Spring Boot, or strong backend experience in another language and readiness to ramp up quickly
• Shipping client-side features alongside backend work, on any of web, Android or iOS
• Writing automated tests across more than one surface
• Live-streaming, video, high-scale consumer products, moderation, fintech or communication platforms
• Aerospike, Docker and Kubernetes, GCP and BigQuery

Technical stack

Backend: Java 17-21, Spring Boot, GCP, Apache Kafka, MySQL, Redis, Aerospike, GitLab.

Clients: React and TypeScript on web, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose on Android, Swift on iOS.

How we hire

• An intro call.
• A 90-minute working session on a small live-streaming codebase, which we hand you at the start. You work on your own machine, with your own AI tooling, sharing your screen. We are interested in how you scope the problem, what you ask us, and how you satisfy yourself that what you built works. Fluency with our particular stack is not scored, and there is nothing to prepare.
• A final conversation with the team.
