Job Description

Our client is a technology company solving payments problems for businesses. Their mission is to help businesses in Africa become profitable, envied, and loved. They provide a suite of products to help businesses accept payments online and offline, manage their operations, and grow their business. Our client is driven by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and customer satisfaction.

Our client is looking for a talented Product Designer to help build exceptional payment experiences for businesses and the people who pay them. Your work will directly impact millions of Africans as they engage with digital commerce.

You'll be embedded in a team alongside product managers and engineers, often as the only designer in the room, working across consumer-facing and merchant-facing surfaces. Your day-to-day will involve shaping product direction, conducting user research, designing flows and interfaces, contributing to our design system (Pax), and iterating based on real feedback.

One thing to be upfront about: their design team is in the middle of a deliberate shift from product design toward design engineering. They are moving toward a model where designers don't just design what they build, but increasingly build it in code, often with support from AI tools. Some of them are further along than others, and they are honest that it's a work in progress. They are not looking for someone who has already arrived. They looking for a strong product designer who's excited to grow in this direction and help the team get there.

You'll report directly to the Product Design Lead. This is a full-time role, and the successful candidate will ideally be physically located in Lagos, Nigeria.

Job Type: Full Time/Permanent

Location: Nigeria

Workplace: Hybrid

Requirements

  • You have 4+ years designing digital products, with a portfolio that demonstrates your process and outcomes, not just polished final screens.
  • You have strong visual design fundamentals: typography, colour, layout, and interaction.
  • You're highly proficient in Figma, and have good judgment about fidelity: when a sketch is enough and when something needs to feel real.
  • You have experience designing for financial services, payments, or e-commerce.
  • You care about accessibility, including colour contrast, legible hierarchy, and designing for the full range of people who use what we build.
  • You have experience conducting user research and applying what you learn to design decisions.
  • You have a genuine appetite for code. You don’t need to be fluent, but you’re excited to learn, and ideally, you’ve already started reading or writing some HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • You’ve had some exposure to AI building tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, v0, or similar, even if only through personal experiments.
  • You’re interested in the craft of accessible implementation, including semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, and screen reader behavior, not just how things look.
  • You have strong taste, and can evaluate many options to identify the one that best serves the people using it
  • You’re genuinely curious about the business. You want to understand why something is being built, not just what to build
  • You think in systems, and design with an awareness of how one surface connects to another
  • You’re honest about your own work. You can explain your decisions, what you’re unsure about, and what you’d do differently
  • Have hands-on experience building and shipping interfaces in code, with or without AI tools
  • Are familiar with component-based UI frameworks, with React preferred
  • Have experience with interaction design, micro-interactions, and motion
  • Can prototype at high fidelity in Framer, code, or directly in an AI tool
  • Have contributed to a production design system
  • Bring a background in other disciplines, such as graphic design, web design, illustration, 3D, or motion

Responsibilities

  • Design across the product. You'll create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs for payment experiences, balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Own your work through to quality. You'll see your designs through implementation and own design QA. As you grow into building, this will increasingly mean fixing issues directly in code, rather than only flagging them.
  • Grow into building. You'll get comfortable taking ideas from concept to working prototype using AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Lovable. The expectation isn't that you can do this on day one. — It's that you're genuinely up for learning it, and that you build the habit of understanding the code you ship.
  • Contribute to Pax. You'll help maintain and evolve our design system, ensuring consistency across our client’s products and helping make Pax a shared language for designers, engineers, and the AI tools we build with.
  • Research and validate. You'll run usability tests and merchant interviews, and use what you learn to make better product decisions. Significant product work involves direct user input, and that's not optional.
  • Frame product problems. You’ll work with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand customer problems, clarify requirements, define success, and turn ambiguous ideas into clear product directions.
  • Give and receive feedback. You'll take part in weekly design crits and learning sessions, sharing work early and helping the team sharpen its taste collectively.
  • Design for real product outcomes. You’ll use data, customer feedback, and product goals to evaluate the effectiveness of your work, learn from what ships, and keep improving the experience over time.
  • Think through the full experience. You’ll design not just the happy path, but also edge cases, empty states, errors, permissions, notifications, and other details that make products feel clear, reliable, and trustworthy.
