About the Role:

The Senior Producer of Assignment and Story Centricity works everyday to ensure New Brunswickers get the stories they need from their CBC, to drive journalistic excellence and to make CBC New Brunswick the multi-platform choice for news and current affairs that gives people what they want, when they want it, and how they want it. They lead responsiveness to breaking news and support gathering for enterprise and current affairs journalism by overseeing daily, mid and long term assignment, resource management and logistics planning.

The Senior Producer of Assignment and Story Centricity has direct reports and plays a critical role in managing the performance of team members in addition to planning, directing, and coordinating the work of others. They support team development and ongoing staff feedback, including the PDD process.

The Senior Producer of Assignment and Story Centricity ensures assignments and resources are allocated against strategic priorities. They optimize the story-centered assignment process by being a champion of SCA best practices and leading the evolution of newsroom processes. They lead the one-division relationship with assignment colleagues (network / local). They stay informed of performance data and analytics, contribute to learnings (ie; AB headline testing), and apply best practices.

This is a full-time permanent position, based in Fredericton.

Key Tasks:

  • Planning, directing, and coordinating staff and resource assignment for breaking, daily and enterprise news and current affairs journalism.

  • Providing editorial oversight to ensure content is original, relevant and impactful, elevates a range of voices and perspectives, identifies legal risk and adheres to our Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Supervising direct reports, playing a critical role in managing the performance of team members.

  • Supporting team development including the PDD process and providing ongoing individual feedback.

  • Ensuring resources are allocated against strategic priorities.

  • Maintaining a comprehensive calendar of events and critical dates, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of the context, strategic significance, and possible resource requirements of each.

  • Leading the one-division relationship with assignment colleagues (network / local).

  • Driving the story-centered assignment process by staying up to date on best practices and evolving assignment processes.

  • Staying informed of performance data and analytics, contributing to learnings (ie; AB headline testing), and applying best practices.

  • Performing all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

About You:

  • You are an experienced team leader and know how to plan, direct, and co-ordinate the work of others, as well as manage the performance of team members

  • You know how to balance a senior leadership role that includes an accountability to achieve strategic objectives with the continuous requirement to focus on the details that ensure that content is of the highest quality

  • You have a solid track record of quick editorial judgment and making immediate decisions in complex and stressful environments

  • You are a critical thinker and can sift through complex layers of a story, and provide guidance or seek consultation when needed

  • You have sound experience and judgment in news, Journalistic Standards and Practices and media law

  • You have experience in and understanding of all content delivery platforms, and seek collaboration and seamlessness between teams, putting the audience first through a story centric approach

  • You are a highly-motivated journalist and thrive during breaking news

  • You have demonstrated excellence in assignment, logistics and planning, experience in risk assessment and mitigation, and have a keen understanding of operational and workload demands.

  • You are an exceptional communicator, bring a team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation

  • You enjoy leading in a collaborative manner that fosters an open environment and encourages input from all team members

  • You have demonstrated skills in talent recognition, development and retention

  • You are enthusiastic and passionate about CBC’s mission and have a thorough understanding of CBC objectives and how to implement them

  • You are committed to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences

  • You are engaged, interested and immersed in the diversity of experiences that make up contemporary Canada. You will encourage members of the team to bring their life experiences, perspectives and expertise to the program, with the goal of enriching the team and the content of CBC New Brunswick

Education required:

  • Job requires a university degree or equivalent.

Experience required:

  • Job requires seven (7) years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, which is directly related to the area of assignment.
