Senior producer, Radio Active (English Services) (On-Site)

CBC Edmonton is looking for a senior producer to lead Radio Active, its popular afternoon radio current affairs program that catches listeners up on the news of the day and brings the sounds of this growing city to their supper-hour commutes.

Reporting to the executive producer of programming and engagement, the senior producer will work with a team of journalists to create exclusive and entertaining live, on-air programming that energizes and entertains audiences three hours a day, Monday through Friday.

This is a one-year assignment, to start in September.

We’re looking for a strong, dynamic leader who is innovative and adaptive, and who inspires others to experiment and take risks. You will be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, ensuring our programming connects listeners with the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. You also understand the value of fun for audiences tuning in after a long day.

You are confident in making independent editorial decisions and are naturally collaborative, skilled at navigating conflict and change, breaking down silos and developing a creative and inclusive culture. You will guide, coach and support all members of the Radio Active team, and collaborate with journalists across the newsroom, and work closely with our communications department.

You will also play a role in developing and supporting content for CBC Edmonton’s digital platforms including a weekly podcast, live story pages and video content for CBC Edmonton’s streaming channel.

This role requires a full-time, on-site presence. The regular schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, though flexibility to work other days and shift times will be required.

Your responsibilities:

• Oversee the daily operations of Radio Active, including assigning staff, making decisions about story priorities and rollouts, determining program lineups, and providing editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and meets our journalistic standards
• Vet scripts and audio packages as needed.
• Lead planning sessions and programming reviews to ensure Radio Active resonates with audiences in a continuously changing media environment.
• Build strategies for Radio Active to broaden its content offer on digital, social and streaming platforms.
• Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills on-air and behind the scenes to produce content of the highest quality.
• Conceive and produce special programming, which could include newsroom-wide breaking news specials and remote broadcasts.
• Collaborate with various producers across platforms and locations.
• Help oversee staffing and scheduling decisions.

• Work closely with communications teams to deepen our community connections through programming, outreach and stakeholder sessions.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

• Demonstrated experience leading a team in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
• Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism and CBC/Radio-Canada's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
• Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
• A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
• An experienced programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production, and the ability to develop and evaluate programming while providing feedback that is direct and kind.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
• A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
• Experience with developing content strategies that feature new voices and perspectives and connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences.
• An appreciation of the communities we serve in Edmonton, central Alberta and northern Alberta and a nuanced understanding of diverse perspectives and lived experiences in the region.
• Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends.
• Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
• University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
