Job Description
The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is tasked with solving unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business. They must proactively identify and solve the most complex problems that impact the management and direction of the business. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is considered a specialist in the field of Structural (Eng) and they offer a broad base of knowledge about the Engineering function. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer impacts the direction and resource allocation of programs and projects in their discipline and works within general functional policies and industry guidelines. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer role requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop creative solutions to Structural (Eng) challenges.
The SPSE is expected to be experienced in SACS, ANSYS/ABAQUS.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Basic Functions
- Plan, organize and direct all aspects of structural engineering work for Subsea Structures and Construction Structural Engineering.
- Ensure compliance with the Contract and Variations in all respects and propose Change Order Requests when potentially deviating from the Contract.
- Responsible for resource allocation of Subsea Structures Detail Design & Construction Structural Design personnel throughout the project.
- Define role, responsibilities and authorities for reportees.
- Delivering the detail engineering design scopes in accordance with the approved budget and baseline schedule.
- Ensure detail design engineering activities are performed in compliance with MDR Quality Management System Procedures and project specific procedures/plans.
- Monitor and manage the detail engineering design risk profile & mitigation measures with assistance from relevant departments.
- Performs fabrication support engineering, and offshore installation support engineering.
- Ensures that QA & HSE policies and practices are properly administered and executed
- Keep the Project Engineering Manager apprised of activities and concerns.
- Establish and maintain technical and professional standards within his/her team and ensuring that the work complies with Company objectives and specs/procedures.
- Identify and plan contingency measures and procedures. Apply Lessons Learnt.
- Assist in developing engineering and procedures specific to the project.
- Maintain close co-ordination with other engineering disciplines, planning and fabrication as required.
- Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified. Coordinate material control requirements and maintains agreed material order release dates, ensures standards are followed.
- Participate in internal, client and third party technical audit on engineering deliverables and vendor documents.
- Coordinate with Geotechnical design engineering team for scope of work related to the subsea structures
- Prepares engineering estimates, and engineering proposals.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Participate in the preparation of detailed Structural/Piping Engineering scope, schedule and estimates. Plan discipline level 4 detail deliverable schedule / register compliant with the overall execution plan.
- Plan manpower and resources based on the project schedule.
- Maintain responsibility for the engineering integrity of the design group.
- Review scope of work, attend kick-off meeting and highlight any major concerns at the outset of the project by apprising the Project Engineering Manager / Project Engineers. Take appropriate initiatives to address the issues.
- Co-ordination and management of the assigned Discipline Engineers and Designers to ensure adequate staffing, technical quality, timely work performance and schedules and budgets established are maintained in accordance with fabrication standards, Level 2 procedures and to a high professional standard. Review the work of the personnel assigned to him/her for adequacy, technical quality and fit for purpose.
- Co-ordination of design requirements with other Disciplines, Customers and the vendors.
- Review contract requirements for project execution, organize the preparation of the deliverables list, identify requirements and scope of work
- Review and prepare engineering design basis for all projects, Analysis of structures for in-service and pre-service conditions and detailed steel work design.
- Provide guidance on preparing structural and piping general arrangements, basic schemes for fabrication and installation. Establish contract review criteria, identify and resolve discrepancies and divergences from original proposal through the instigation of technical queries to projects/client.
- Supervise engineering design calculations and analysis of structural and marine items in accordance with Australian and International codes and standards, and project requirements.
- Lead and perform concept and detailed design of installation aids for offshore operations, grillage and seafastening.
- Lead and perform vessel and barge structural integrity checks on basis of project requirements.
- Review and approval of all documents produced by his/her team and ensuring that the single discipline/inter-discipline checking is carried out as per the Company procedures.
- Review and approve all detailed drawings/ project weight control report ensuring technical correctness, professional presentation and that fabrication and installation requirements are satisfied.
- Review multidiscipline deliverables, vendor data. Provide comments to ensure all interfaces are detailed clash free.
- Review comments from clients & other agencies on documents and drawings produced by the discipline engineers, resolve and give guidance on updating and incorporating comments.
- Assisting procurement personnel in procuring structural material/ items through review of material requisitions for structural items and review structural vendor data for correctness and adequacy of input to design. Perform TBE on structural items from vendors as project requirements.
- Monitor changes in scope and raise change notifications.
- Provide technical support to all fabrication queries. Identify defect / rectification requirements.
- Monitor additional construction engineering requirements. Review the same with the Lead Construction Engineer, Production Engineer and Offshore operations engineers.

Supervises: Structural Engineer, Discipline Engineers and Designers within the group

Essential Qualifications and Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering
- Over 15+ years of experience in Structural engineering design with at least 5 years applicable experience in subsea structures and piping design and construction.
Additional Qualifications:
- At least 2 years as a Lead Engineer on a subsea structures design project.
- Capable of leading work on medium to large size projects or areas within larger projects.
- Detailed knowledge of all design techniques and analysis methods. Detailed knowledge of fabrication yard procedures and offshore equipment. Familiarity with heavy lift, weighing and load out. Experience in standard structural and FEA software such as SACS, ANSYS/Abaqus
- Familiarity with structural and/or mechanical engineering and equipment used in the O&G industry offshore, e.g. vessel codes, standards and specifications.
