Position: Senior / Principal Mining Consultant

Location: Global

About the role:

We are looking for a Senior Mining Consultant / Principal Mining Consultant to play a leading role and be part of our Strategy Optimization team. We focus on bridging the gap between technical solutions and commercial mining outcomes by providing whole of mine optimization advice. The role(s) will be based out of one of our global offices with hybrid work options available.

You might currently be in an operational, consulting or other technical role. In any case, you’ve got a core understanding of the full mine value chain and are keen to deep dive into the intricate challenges and opportunities often associated with the mining industry to uncover real value. As a member of our Strategy Optimization team you will be supported by consultants from all across the globe – all experts in their respective disciplines, keen to share their knowledge.

Strategy Optimization and AMC’s Hill of Value®

Every mining operation is unique, and it takes years of hard-won experience to understand how changes to the economic environment, the physical environment, the mining an processing operations impact on a mining operation’s present and future value.

Based on our unique IP, AMC’s Hill of Value® (HoV) process allows our clients to model all options and scenarios to ensure they understand the key opportunities and risks associated with all aspects of their mining operations. Utilizing our HoV modelling software, we provide a robust and comprehensive assessment of multiple input and scenario combinations to uncover all the available strategic options, allowing our clients to make an informed decision to achieve their business goals.

Who you will be working with

Andrew Hall is the Head of AMC’s Mine Smarter team. Previously the Managing Director of AMC, he has over 30 years of experience with expertise in strategy optimization, feasibility studies, technical due diligence, and business improvement and transformation of underground and open pit metalliferous mines.
You will report to Dr Tim Pelech, Technical Lead – Strategy Optimization, a seasoned Mining Engineer with experience in several world-class operations since 2012. He has previously held positions of alternate underground manager and mine planning superintendent. His expertise also includes applied research, optimization methods, numerical modelling, as well as mine scheduling, ventilation and infrastructure.

By combining our HoV process and proven analytical tools with expert knowledge in whole of mine
optimization, we deliver new insights and unlocking real value for our clients. You will work in a well-established team environment and use your strong analytical abilities and communication skills to help unlock real value in mining operations and projects.
You will undertake comprehensive assessments of strategic mine plans and business strategies, analyse complex data sets, and collaborate with AMC teams to quantify value drivers and develop optimized solutions. These projects typically include site visits to fully understand the processes and practices used at the operation, to liaise with key stakeholders, and collect information to identify optimal solutions.
You will contribute to strategy optimization studies, concept to feasibility studies, business improvement / transformation studies, and a variety of other projects. You will maintain an understanding of emerging technologies applicable to the mining industry, and continue to develop your professional network within the industry.

• Carry out numerical modelling using the AMC Hill of Value® process to uncover strategic insights for clients.
• Become an industry thought-leader on the topics of cut-off grade and strategic optimization, publishing relevant content and facilitating workshops.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to business development activities.
• Mentor junior team members and collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Deliver high-quality reports, presentations and project documentation.
• Support company-wide consulting and project management activities and uphold AMC’s values and standards.

Competencies

• Solid analytics integrative, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication, including high-quality report writing.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with a client-focused approach.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative, and support team development.

• Proficient in relevant mining software and general computer applications.
• An interest in computational and optimization methods.
• Knowledge of programming fundamentals and languages such as python is advantageous.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in mining engineering. A higher qualification such as Master’s MBA or PhD is favourable but not essential and shows a commitment to relevant self-development.
• For the Principal position, a minimum of 15 years’ experience in mining with strong technical foundations and operations experience.
• Demonstrated capacity to work independently, coupled with strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
• Commitment to high ethical standards and professionalism, with values aligned to those of AMC.
