We are seeking a highly experienced Senior / Principal HV Substation Engineer to support complex power and energy engineering projects across the United States while working remotely from Mexico. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and supporting the engineering and design of high-voltage and extra-high-voltage substations and transmission infrastructure . This position will contribute to projects involving renewable generation, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), generation interconnection facilities, transmission infrastructure, utility-scale projects, substation expansions and upgrades, and large-load developments such as data center infrastructure. The engineer will take ownership of engineering packages, develop and review electrical and physical substation designs, coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities, review technical deliverables, and provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities may include developing and reviewing single-line diagrams, general arrangements, equipment layouts, grounding designs, bus configurations, cable schedules, AC/DC auxiliary systems, control schematics, protection and control drawings, equipment specifications, engineering calculations, and other technical documentation. The position will also involve reviewing vendor drawings and technical documentation, supporting equipment procurement and technical bid evaluations, coordinating engineering interfaces between electrical, civil, structural, protection, and control disciplines, and ensuring that designs comply with applicable utility requirements, industry standards, and project specifications. The engineer will provide technical support during construction, testing, commissioning, and energization and may participate in client meetings, design reviews, technical discussions, and project coordination activities with U.S.-based teams and stakeholders. At the Principal level, the engineer will be expected to provide technical leadership, independently lead major engineering projects or packages, review and approve complex deliverables, resolve technical issues, identify engineering risks, establish best practices, and mentor junior and mid-level engineers. This position is best suited for an engineer with hands-on experience designing and delivering actual HV/EHV substations , rather than a background focused exclusively on power system studies or general electrical engineering. Requirements Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Significant professional experience in HV/EHV substation engineering and design . Demonstrated experience developing, reviewing, and delivering substation engineering packages. Strong knowledge of substation physical and electrical design. Experience with HV and EHV substations. Experience with utility-scale power and transmission projects. Strong understanding of substation equipment and technical specifications. Knowledge of Protection & Control principles. Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams. Ability to independently review complex technical deliverables. Strong technical documentation and engineering report-writing skills. Ability to identify technical risks and develop practical engineering solutions. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Professional English proficiency for direct interaction with U.S.-based teams, clients, utilities, vendors, and project stakeholders. Knowledge of applicable IEEE, ANSI, NESC, and utility engineering standards is highly valued. Previous experience with U.S. power, utility, and transmission projects is highly desirable. Experience with renewable generation, BESS, generation interconnection, transmission substations, large-load infrastructure, or data center projects is preferred. U.S. Professional Engineer (PE) registration is a strong plus but is not required.
