Overview

WildBrain Studios is looking for a S enior Previs Layout Artist to join our team!

Reporting to the Previs/Layout Supervisor, this role you’ll you interpret storyboards and realize them into the CG environment by establishing camera blocking, composition and lens choice. You work closely with the team to create balanced solutions to any related technical issues.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

What You’ll Do:

  • CG visualization of storyboard animatic 
    Establish camera blocking, composition and lens choice 
  • Character key posing and animation
  • Work with the Previs/Layout Supervisor to provide coverage options to Director 
  • Work with the Previs/Layout Supervisor to ensure work adheres to the vision set out by the directors 
  • Proactively identify possible creative / technical problems with shots 
  • Ensure the Previs/Layout team is productive by answering questions that arise 
  • Train, mentor, and motivate new Previs/Layout Artists who are placed on the crew 
  • Assist Previs/Layout team in execution of camera lensing and staging, composition and blocking of scenes from storyboard animatics 
  • Complete assigned sequences within scheduled timeframe 
  • Ensure shot continuity 
  • Anticipate, communicate, and troubleshoot any creative or technical issues with assistance from lead Layout artist 
  • Assist /guide Previs/Layout Artists in the organization of their assignments 
  • Keep current on Layout techniques and technology 
    Create and rig proxy models as needed 

What You’ll Bring:

  • 3+ years of experience in animation or film industry 
    Solid knowledge of Maya is essential 
  • Ability to interpret storyboards and realizes them in a CG environment 
  • Firm understanding of cameras, staging, composition, perspective, pacing, timing and cinematography concepts in animation context 
  • Solid understanding of cinematic language and camera terminology 
  • A strong understanding of character key posing and a developed foundation of animation principles.
  • Ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas 
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and manage time efficiently 
  • Ability to work alone and collaboratively, often with multiple tasks and under deadline pressure 
  • Encouraging attitude towards feedback and new initiatives 
  • Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation or equivalent experience an asset 
    Basic modeling and rigging is an asset

This is a Union position and the terms and conditions of employment are covered by a collective agreement.

Pay Range:


$1625 - $1961, CAD per week based on a 40-hour work week.


Candidates are paid within the range posted, but their exact pay will vary based on the level, responsibilities and expectations of the role. We also take into consideration the experience and skills that individual brings, with consideration of our internal equity.
