The Workplace Policy and Legislation branch is within the Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces division of the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration. The Workplace Policy and Legislation branch is a fast-paced and results-oriented environment that strives for excellence while developing and fostering cooperative relationships across the Government of Alberta and with external stakeholders. The branch is comprised of three units that focus on employment standards, labour relations, as well as occupational health and safety and workers' compensation policy and legislation.

Role Responsibilities

The Senior Policy Analyst develops high quality research and policy analysis on a range of intergovernmental labour issues. Under the direction of the Director, Labour Relations Policy, the position involves research and analysis of identified topics and policy issues, policy consultation and the development of communication documents relevant to Alberta's labour policy and programs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Project management support for Canadian Association of Administrators of Labour Legislation (CAALL) and its various federal, provincial and territorial (FPT) working groups.
  • Preparation of briefing material for meetings and teleconferences of CAALL Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Senior Officials.
  • Co-operation and collaboration between Labour staff and officials in other divisions, ministries and the federal government, particularly as it relates to issues of shared priorities relating to labour legislation, including programming or policy development.

Qualifications

University graduation in Social Sciences (Economics, Geography, Sociology) or in a related field, supplemented by four years related experience.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

Assets:

  • Ability to analyze complex issues and generate realistic options and recommendations.
  • Knowledge of Alberta labour-related activities and relevant provincial and federal policies and legislation.
  • Excellent writing, problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and the ability to interpret qualitative and quantitative research results.

Notes

This is a temporary position for 6 months, working 36.25 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Working location will be Edmonton, Alberta.
