The Utilities Division is responsible for policy development and advice related to Alberta’s electricity system. The Division takes a strategic and long-term view of the electricity system when developing policy and has strong relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders and electricity agencies.
The Rural Utilities Branch provides regulatory oversight of approximately 225 rural utility co-operatives and 33 gas utilities while supporting natural gas, electricity, and water co-operatives primarily on matters of business administration and governance: interpretation of legislation, ensuring alignment with legislation, and the approval of supplemental by-law.

The position also contributes to policy for rural natural gas and water utility associations, while advancing ministry priorities related to rural development, public safety, and cross-ministry initiatives.
