Job Description
Your Team Responsibilities
The DevOps Platform Engineering team builds and runs the tooling, platforms and workflows that every engineering team at MSCI uses to deliver software. We operate as a software engineering team whose customers are other engineers — we build internal products, APIs, automation and integrations, and we run them as products with roadmaps, users and service commitments.
We own and maintain several Developer tools in MSCI's developer toolchain end to end. That covers the tools engineers work in every day, including GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, SonarQube and Cursor, as well as the platforms we build and run ourselves such as our Backstage-based internal developer portal. Ownership here means we select, integrate, secure, operate and continuously improve these services, and we are accountable for their availability, and adoption across the firm.
Alongside the tools, we enable standardisation across the software development lifecycle. We define the golden paths, reusable CI/CD workflows, platform abstractions, engineering standards and governance models that product and engineering teams adopt so they can move quickly without re-solving the same problems.
As part of the MSCI Core DevOps Engineering team, you will help shape where software delivery and developer enablement go next across the organisation.
What the team owns
- Developer tooling: GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, SonarQube, Docker, Cursor
- Internal developer platforms: Backstage-based developer portal and our in-house developer productivity platform
- CI/CD platforms, reusable pipelines and release automation
- SDLC standards, golden paths and governance models
- Self-service capabilities, internal APIs and integrations that remove manual toil from engineering teams
- Developer experience measurement, adoption and the services we provide to engineering teams across MSCI
Your Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain reusable CI/CD frameworks, GitHub Actions workflows, templates, and platform abstractions that make the golden paths the fastest way to ship software at MSCI — simple enough to adopt quickly, flexible enough for diverse engineering use cases.
- Develop and support internal platform capabilities, APIs, automation services, and integrations across the developer toolchain, including GitHub Enterprise, Azure DevOps, SonarQube, Cursor, Backstage, and our in-house developer productivity platform.
- Run the developer tooling estate as a product: monitor health and usage, resolve issues, manage upgrades and configuration, and improve the reliability of services engineers depend on daily.
- Apply proactive problem solving to developer pain points — find friction in engineering workflows before it is escalated, trace issues to root cause, and deliver durable fixes rather than workarounds.
- Bring intellectual curiosity and a critical thinking mindset to platform decisions: evaluate new tools, patterns, and approaches on their merits, and make evidence-based recommendations that raise the quality of what we deliver to our developers.
- Contribute to SDLC standardization initiatives and engineering best practices, translating agreed standards into working automation, templates, and controls.
- Partner with Security, Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure, Risk, and Application Engineering teams to embed governance, compliance, and operational controls directly into engineering workflows and platform capabilities.
- Treat engineering teams as customers: gather feedback, document and support what you build.
Your skills and experience that will help you excel
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- Hands on Programming experience in Go or Java.
- Experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps Engineering, or related software engineering roles.
- Software engineering mindset, with hands-on experience building automation, APIs, internal tooling, or reusable workflows that other engineers depend on.
- Solid working experience with SCM and CI/CD tooling such as GitHub (preferred), Azure DevOps, and/or GitLab, including repositories, pipelines, reusable workflows and templates, permissions, and integrations.
- Good understanding of the SDLC and software delivery workflows, including source control governance, branching strategies, release processes, and developer enablement practices.
- Experience building and consuming REST APIs and webhooks.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Operational mindset, with experience supporting tooling or services that other teams rely on in production.
- Intellectual curiosity and critical thinking — willingness to dig into unfamiliar problems, question how things work today, and evidence a better way.
Nice to Have
- Exposure to an internal developer platform or portal (Backstage or equivalent).
- Experience building self-service engineering workflows or developer enablement tooling.
- Experience with platform observability, engineering metrics, or developer productivity initiatives.
- Exposure to GitOps frameworks.
- Experience in GitHub Enterprise Platform & Services
- Familiarity with frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript for platform UI and tooling development.
- Agentic SDLC experience and AI-native development.
