An exciting and challenging opportunity exists within Old Mutual South Africa, based at Mutualpark (Pinelands), for a Senior Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Practitioner. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and coordinating all OHS matters, while contributing to and implementing the OML Group OHS strategy and associated plans.

The role entails overall accountability for integrated OHS programmes, including building safety and the safeguarding of all occupants—staff, contractors, service providers, visitors, and tenants. The incumbent will ensure compliance with applicable policies, standards, procedures/protocols statutory & regulatory requirements, overseeing adherence to applicable occupational health and safety legislation and related legal obligations.

Key Result Areas:

  • Manages and coordinates Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) matters across the business and building occupants by contributing to and implementing the OML Group OHS Strategy, plans, policies, and standards, ensuring effective operational application and compliance.

  • Facilitates implementation of the OML OHS Policies & Standards requirements, and all related management systems.

  • Ensures reporting on OHS and performance as per prescribed standards.

  • Facilitates/Conducts OHS reviews, risk assessments/analysis.

  • Delivers and facilitates OHS training and awareness programmes, with a strong emphasis on improving safety culture and compliance with legal, regulatory, and internal OHS requirements.

  • Contributes to the OHS Planner by planning and supporting events and campaigns that strengthen safety culture and reinforce safe behaviours.

  • Liaises with relevant parties both internally and externally, participates in information sharing and network building to exchange related information to improve/enhance risk management.

  • Leads and supports the implementation and continuous improvement of OHS systems and digital solutions, ensuring accurate data management, reporting, and compliance tracking.

  • Ensure the establishment and ongoing effectiveness of OHS structures and forums, promoting active employee participation and engagement across the area of responsibility.

  • Liaises with local agencies and external service providers relating to health and safety as and when required.

  • Keeps abreast of all current and pending legislation pertaining to OHS and responds to changes proactively and appropriately.

  • Drafts OHS reports with findings and recommendations and follows up all recommendations made to business.

  • Provides day‑to‑day OHS support and practical guidance to operational teams, ensuring safe work practices and compliance with applicable OHS requirements.

  • Oversees and leads the OHS team within the area of responsibility, ensuring capability and competency frameworks are in place to support business requirements and drive the achievement of OHS objectives.

  • Compiles relevant OHS budgets, establishes and manages Service Level Agreements, and ensures effective utilisation of funds to support OHS plans.

  • Support, facilitate, and actively participate in the audits and inspections programme.

  • Implements incident management standards and procedures, review serious incident investigations, and ensure closure and sign‑off corrective action plans.

  • Implements and coordinates emergency response procedures, including emergency team orientation, drills, readiness reporting, and ongoing operational support across buildings.

  • Coordinates and supports OHS projects and events, ensuring effective planning, logistics, stakeholder engagement, and close‑out reporting.

  • Implements and oversees contractor management and events standards, with a strong focus on ongoing compliance monitoring to ensure full adherence to internal policies, procedures, and all applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements: Skills, Qualifications, Experience required

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in Risk Management and/or Occupational Health & Safety.

  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience with strong exposure to OHS legislation and the implementation of OHS management systems.

  • Proven people leadership experience, including the ability to guide, influence, and support teams and stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing OHS‑related budgets, ensuring cost control, accurate forecasting, and effective financial governance.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and professional skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective internal and external relationships.

Minimum Qualification

  • A first-degree or diploma in Risk Management and/or Occupational Health & Safety.

  • Possession of professional certification or tertiary qualification will be an added advantage
