Job Description

Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.

The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for designing and ensuring the performance of Optus’s transport network, which supports voice, data, and video services for both fixed broadband and mobile customers. This role focuses on accurate and efficient provisioning of telecom network services, adherence to operational standards, and driving automation to enhance reliability and scalability. It requires strong expertise in validating network designs, troubleshooting complex provisioning issues, and coordinating intricate network changes with minimal disruption.

Key responsibilities include configuring and deploying IP/MPLS services across multi-vendor platforms such as Juniper, Nokia, and Cisco, using technologies like MPLS, Segment Routing (SR/SRv6), BGP-LU, and ISIS. The role leverages automation tools such as Cisco NSO and Red Hat Ansible to streamline provisioning tasks, validate configurations, and support network changes. Collaboration with vendors and internal teams is essential, along with continuous learning in emerging technologies to improve network performance and operational efficiency in a dynamic telecommunications' environment.

Open to candidates in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver accurate and efficient provisioning of IP/MPLS circuits and services across multi-vendor platforms (Juniper, Cisco, Nokia) in line with design and planning requirements.
  • Develop and maintain configuration templates, automation scripts, and workflows using tools like Cisco NSO and Red Hat Ansible to streamline provisioning tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of network configurations, processes, and changes; ensure alignment to change management procedures and quality standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve provisioning issues, assist with root cause analysis, and support escalations from NOC and operations teams during rollout or change activities.
  • Work with architecture and planning teams to validate service feasibility and capacity; interpret design documents and translate them into low-level configurations.
  • Participate in audits, training sessions, and workshops to enhance technical skills and contribute to process improvements in network provisioning.

What You Bring

  • Relevant professionalqualification in Telecommunications, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent extensive industry experience together with proven background in telecom environments.
  • Solid understanding of IP networking, routing/switching, MPLS, SRv6, ISIS, traffic engineering, and multi-vendor platforms (Juniper, Cisco, Nokia); exposure to mobile IP (2G–LTE), VoIP, and transmission technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with SDN frameworks and automation tools such as Cisco NSO and Red Hat Ansible for provisioning and configuration.
  • Logical thinker with advanced troubleshooting skills, capable of supporting design teams and resolving complex provisioning issues.
  • Clear communicator, customer-focused, self-motivated, and team-oriented; strong organizational skills with accountability and adaptability.
  • Proficient in MS Office and IT tools; committed to ongoing technical development and collaboration within cross-functional teams.

The good stuff

  • Competitive remuneration and employee discounts. Make life easier (and more affordable) with $80 monthly credit and 25% off Optus products and unique shopping discounts with our retail partners.
  • Flexible working arrangements with opportunities to work three days in the office, two days remote or home.
  • Competitive leave policies, including additional 'Connected’ days to focus on culture, family, health, community, or whatever’s important to you.
  • We support growing families with inclusive, carer-neutral paid Parental Leave of up to 16 weeks.
  • Build meaningful connections through employee-led networks and diversity initiatives including Culture Connect, Elevate Women, Disability Network and Express Yourself (LGBTQIA+).
  • Put your wellbeing first with free access to counselling and support services, 24/7 — in-person, by phone, SMS, or video.
