About the Role

Join our Core Buyer Engineering team to build innovative, scalable systems that shape the future of ecommerce.

As a Senior MTS – Architect (Senior Staff Software Engineer), you will lead the design and development of large-scale, distributed systems that power eBay’s buyer experience.

You will drive technical strategy, architecture, and innovation, while mentoring engineers and influencing cross-team engineering decisions to deliver high-performance, reliable, and accessible systems.

You will leverage strong backend expertise in Java or Kotlin (mandatory) to build and scale mission-critical services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and evolve scalable, distributed, and highly available systems

  • Develop high-performance backend services using Java/Kotlin

  • Ensure reliability, performance, and accessibility across the platform

  • Translate complex business problems into clean, scalable technical solutions

  • Own and drive architecture for large functional domains

  • Establish and guide engineering best practices and design standards

  • Define and influence technical strategy and long-term roadmaps

  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term scalability and innovation

  • Partner with Product, Design, and Data teams to deliver impactful solutions

  • Mentor engineers, conduct design/code reviews, and elevate engineering quality

  • Drive testable, maintainable, and high-quality code using modern engineering practices

  • Lead release processes, reliability initiatives, and on-call for a 24/7 platform

  • Identify system and productivity bottlenecks and drive improvements

  • Design systems with flexibility to support evolving business needs

Qualifications

Technical Expertise

  • Expert-level backend development experience in Java or Kotlin (mandatory)

  • Proven experience building and scaling distributed, high-availability systems

  • Strong system design expertise (APIs, messaging systems, databases, cloud infrastructure)

  • Experience driving architecture and technical strategy across teams

  • Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and Shift-Left approaches

Experience

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience

  • Proven track record of leading large-scale, complex system delivery

  • Experience driving cross-team technical initiatives end-to-end

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

  • High ownership, accountability, and excellent communication skills

  • Proven ability to influence and align stakeholders across teams
