Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Mortgage Underwriter based in Canada.
This is an opportunity for an experienced mortgage underwriting professional to take ownership of residential lending decisions in a high-volume environment.
You will assess mortgage applications, evaluate credit risk, and make sound decisions within established authority limits.
The role combines analytical rigor with proactive communication and relationship management.
You will manage your own pipeline from initial assessment through closing, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely execution.
You will also work closely with broker partners to resolve complex issues and identify practical solutions.
The environment values autonomy, continuous improvement, collaboration, and high-quality service.
This remote position is ideal for a seasoned underwriter who enjoys solving problems while maintaining strong risk and compliance standards.
Accountabilities:
- Adjudicate residential mortgage applications within established authority limits, applying sound credit judgment and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, lending policies, and internal standards.
- Manage an end-to-end pipeline of mortgage files, balancing speed, accuracy, quality, and service in a high-volume lending environment.
- Review financial, credit, property, and supporting documentation in detail to identify risks, gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities for appropriate solutions.
- Proactively identify missing or unclear information and collaborate with mortgage brokers to resolve complex issues and keep applications progressing toward completion.
- Provide clear, professional, and solution-oriented communication to broker partners, including when delivering complex or challenging decisions.
- Ensure all conditions and documentation are properly satisfied before final approval and closing, maintaining rigorous due diligence throughout the underwriting process.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and internal stakeholders through responsive, transparent, and consistent communication.
- Collaborate across departments to move transactions efficiently through the lending process and resolve issues that could affect closing timelines.
- Identify opportunities to improve underwriting processes, operational efficiency, and customer or broker experience.
- Support team development through knowledge sharing and mentoring of colleagues when appropriate.
- Maintain a strong focus on portfolio quality, risk management, regulatory compliance, and consistent underwriting standards.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of professional experience in residential mortgage underwriting.
- Experience working within a Credit Union, Monoline lender, financial institution, or similar institutional lending environment is an asset.
- Strong knowledge of residential mortgage credit assessment, risk evaluation, lending practices, and supporting documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze mortgage files thoroughly, investigate inconsistencies, ask effective questions, and identify appropriate solutions rather than relying solely on standard outcomes.
- Proven ability to manage a high-volume pipeline independently while maintaining strong attention to detail, quality, and turnaround times.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple files and competing deadlines effectively.
- Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, particularly when working with mortgage brokers and other business partners.
- Ability to communicate complex underwriting decisions clearly, professionally, and with a solution-oriented approach.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across departments and mentor or support other team members.
- Strong judgment, analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously in a remote environment.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is an asset.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards of regulatory compliance, documentation, risk management, and underwriting quality.
Benefits:
- Remote work opportunity available across New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island
- Competitive base salary with a variable bonus structure tied to performance.
- Comprehensive health coverage, including drug, vision, and dental benefits.
- Health and Wellness Spending Accounts.
- 24/7 access to telemedicine, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and mental health services for employees and their families.
- 4 weeks of paid vacation.
- 8 flex days plus statutory holidays.
- RRSP matching program.
- Maternity and parental leave top-up programs.
- Education reimbursement and ongoing professional training.
- Mentoring and opportunities for professional development.
- Opportunity to work with prominent financial institutions, investment managers, and pension funds.
- High level of autonomy and exposure within a growing residential lending environment.
