The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital invites applications from motivated and ambitious surgeons for the position of Senior Medical Officer (SMO) This position offers an excellent opportunity for a cardiac surgery trainee completing training or awaiting FCPS certification to work in a high-volume academic center with structured mentorship, advanced operative exposure, and opportunities for academic and professional growth.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a Senior Medical Officer who will contribute to providing and managing superior patient care while working closely with consultants and the care team. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide perioperative care to cardiothoracic surgical patients under consultant supervision.
  • Manage patients across the wards, CICU, operating rooms, and emergency services.
  • Perform approved bedside procedures and assist in complex cardiac surgical procedures.
  • Participate in departmental teaching, audits, quality improvement initiatives, and academic activities.
  • Support administrative and operational functions of the department.

Operative Exposure

The successful candidate should be competent in:

  • Median sternotomy and Internal Mammary Artery (IMA) harvesting.
  • Arterial and venous cannulation for cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Assisting in CABG, valve, and complex aortic surgery.
  • Decannulation, chest closure, and postoperative ICU management.

The position includes structured hands-on training in coronary anastomoses, radial artery harvesting, valve surgery, complex aortic procedures, and perioperative critical care. Outstanding candidates may be considered for an instructor position within 6–8 months, subject to departmental requirements.

Requirements

You should have the following:

  • MBBS with valid PMDC registration.
  • FCPS Part I and completion of the Intermediate Module.
  • FCPS (Cardiac Surgery) or completion of FCPS Cardiac Surgery training (or awaiting final certification).
  • Prior experience in cardiothoracic surgery is mandatory.
  • Experience in perioperative management of cardiac surgical patients and intensive care.
  • ACLS/BLS certification (or willingness to obtain certification) is desirable.
