Senior Media Advisor

• Join Corporate Services, a division within the Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport
• Clerk Grade 9/10 with a salary range of $133,348-$146,945 + super & leave loading
• Ongoing role based in Sydney, NSW

About the role

As Senior Media Advisor, you will be a trusted media and communications specialist, providing strategic advice on emerging issues, opportunities and media responses. You will work closely with senior government stakeholders and Ministerial Offices to understand priorities, anticipate risks and deliver timely, effective communications.

You will bring stories to life by identifying opportunities, developing compelling media strategies and using data, research, case studies and story talent to create engaging content that resonates with audiences.

You will also build strong relationships with journalists and media outlets, coordinate media events and conferences, and collaborate across the communications portfolio to ensure key messages reach the right audiences through contemporary and targeted channels.

What you'll do

• Develop high-quality media releases, media responses, holding statements, Q&As and other media and communications materials for the department, client groups and Ministerial Offices.
• Monitor the media landscape, identify emerging issues and provide timely advice on potential risks, opportunities and response strategies.
• Develop and deliver proactive and reactive media strategies aligned with government priorities, organisational objectives and contemporary public relations practice.
• Coordinate and manage media conferences, events and announcements to effectively communicate key messages.
• Build and maintain productive relationships with journalists and media outlets across relevant portfolios and areas of interest.
• Work closely with senior government stakeholders and Ministerial Offices to understand expectations and deliver effective media outcomes.
• Contribute to broader communications plans and identify opportunities to use contemporary communications channels to amplify key messages.
• Analyse data, research and insights to develop impactful stories, including identifying compelling case studies and story talent.
• Collaborate with communications, digital and other specialist teams to deliver integrated and targeted communications campaigns.
• Provide informed media and public affairs advice in response to emerging and potentially contentious issues.

About You

You are a confident media professional who can operate effectively in a complex and high-profile environment. You understand the pace and sensitivities of government communications and can provide calm, strategic advice when issues are evolving quickly.

You will have:

• Demonstrated experience developing high-quality media and communications materials and working directly with media outlets to deliver government communications.
• Experience working with Ministerial Offices and Advisors, with an understanding of government priorities and protocols.
• Strong research, writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to turn complex information into clear, engaging and audience-focused content.
• The ability to identify emerging issues, assess media risks and opportunities, and develop effective proactive and reactive responses.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the confidence to work with senior leaders, government stakeholders and media representatives.

Essential Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualifications or demonstrated equivalent relevant professional experience.
• The ability to undertake after-hours, on-call and weekend work on occasion.
