Job Description

Hypersonix is a leading aerospace engineering and advanced manufacturing company specialising in hypersonic technology and scramjet aircraft. We work at the bleeding edge of technology, delivering aircraft that fly faster, reach further, and open new pathways to space - we're a small, fast-growing, highly capable team doing work that genuinely matters.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to own the end-to-end delivery of complex mechanical design packages for our hypersonic flight vehicles and associated support equipment – from design and analysis through manufacture, test and verification. Working with minimal supervision under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Lead, you’ll plan and execute test campaigns on hypersonic systems and review mechanical engineering work in support of design approval.

This is a rare opportunity to get hands-on with cutting-edge hypersonic technology in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. If you’re driven by innovation, thrive on tackling complex problems, and want the autonomy to make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.

What you’ll own

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and analyse mechanical structures and systems for hypersonic vehicles and ground support equipment (production and test jigs), independently from concept through to verification.
  • Plan, execute and report on test and experimental activities for hypersonic systems and components, correlating test data with analysis models.
  • Use simulation and analysis tools to evaluate component and system performance under different operating conditions.
  • Ensure designs are assessed for Design for Manufacture and reliability, and lead Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Peer review mechanical design and analysis artefacts, and take part in design reviews, non-conformance dispositions and failure investigations.
  • Own the execution of assigned Mechanical Design Work Packages in line with program schedule requirements.
  • Technically supervise, mentor and develop junior mechanical engineers, with scope to line manage 1–2 engineers as the team grows.
  • Work with suppliers and customers on mechanical elements and manage subcontracted work as required.
  • Champion engineering processes and configuration management practices and contribute to new technologies that improve vehicle performance and efficiency.

What You’ll Bring

To hit the ground running in this role, you’ll need:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • CPEng/RPEQ registration – currently held or eligible to obtain.
  • 5+ years in mechanical systems design and analysis within aerospace or other high-technology industries, including independent delivery of complex design packages.
  • Experience planning and conducting mechanical test and experimental activities – test readiness, execution, instrumentation and reporting.
  • Strong mechanical design and analysis expertise, with hands-on proficiency in simulation and analysis tools and experience in design for manufacture and assembly.
  • Experience with configuration management and PLM systems for mechanical design and CAD data.
  • Demonstrated ability to technically supervise, mentor and develop junior engineers.
  • The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain any applicable security clearance or background checks.
  • Right to live and work in Australia.

Bonus points for..

  • Mechanical system design and simulation experience in the aerospace sector.
  • Experience with hypersonic technology, aircraft design or other space/weight-constrained products.
  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
  • Experience with structural, thermal, vibration or environmental testing of aerospace flight hardware.
  • Experience supporting ground test, flight test or launch campaigns.

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen/ Permanent Resident or have an appropriate Australian work visa. The Australian Defence Trade Controls Act (DTC) apply and as such, we may need to ask additional questions about citizenship as applicable. Applicants will also need to complete pre-employment workforce screening checks.

Life at Hypersonix

We're a 70-person team working in one of the most demanding fields in aerospace. The pace is fast, priorities shift quickly and expectations are high — but so is the impact – and if that energises you, you'll thrive here. That means bringing the grit to tackle problems no one has solved before, the ownership to see what needs doing and do it, the agility to adapt fast and a genuine commitment to backing your team.

Hypersonix Launch Systems

About Hypersonix Launch Systems

Hypersonix Launch Systems builds and operates hydrogen-fuelled scramjet powered autonomous aircraft for a range of government, defence, aerospace, and commercial customers.

The first hypersonic flyer to launch is DART AE (Additive Engineering). DART AE is a 3.5 metre long hypersonic aircraft that is powered by a single SPARTAN scramjet engine and makes significant use of 3-D printed high temperature metal alloys. It uses hydrogen fuel and will fly at Mach 7.

The launch is part of the HyCAT program by the Defense Innovation Unit. Hypersonix was the first company to be selected for the program in March 2023, targeting a first launch for Q1 2026 in the United States.

Hypersonix is revolutionizing hypersonic flight technology with a cloud-based software-as-a-service digital twin. By combining extensive knowledge and data from atmospheric flight tests, this virtual replica accurately predicts real-world outcomes. It allows rapid and repetitive testing of materials, designs, manufacturing techniques and enables global 3D printing of components through secure additive manufacturing.

Hypersonix product road map also includes VISR, a high-speed suborbital Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and rapid airfreight flyer demonstrator as well as Delta Velos Orbiter for small satellite launch in a non-ballistic trajectory.
