The Role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer, is responsible for leading and supporting projects from concept through completion, driving them forward with minimal oversight while proactively identifying and resolving obstacles along the way.

This role demands strong communication skills, as the Senior Mechanical Engineer regularly interfaces with cross-functional teams, clients, and stakeholders to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable information. Backed by deep technical expertise across mechanical design, analysis, and manufacturing principles, they serve as a go-to resource for solving challenging engineering problems and mentoring less experienced team members.

Ultimately, this role combines hands-on technical mastery with the leadership and accountability needed to deliver high-quality projects on time and within scope. This position reports to the Director of Operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Assists to steer the mechanical direction of projects in collaboration with input from the applications engineer, project manager, and the cross-functional operations team.
• Liaise directly with customers to understand their needs - both commercial and technical.
• Provide clarity of communication and tailor the level of detail and framing of technical information to the audience — internal teams, executives, and customers.
• Assists to identify the functional requirements of the project with the cross-functional technical team and customer and ensure the design solution meets the requirements.
• Critically evaluate the as-sold concept against the defined functional requirements and customer needs and own the final concept direction while escalating cost, schedule, or scope impacts.
• Support the PM and mechanical lead with budget and schedule adherence planning, resource recommendations, proactive risk mitigation, and change management control.
• Responsible for the mechanical design execution throughout the full project lifecycle, directing and overseeing design resources and reviewing their deliverables for technical quality.
• Drive interactive design reviews, both internal and customer facing, to communicate design direction with confidence and clarity, while receiving and evaluating cross-functional input. 
• Drive problem solving and managing challenges, issues, and risks while applying sound judgement and assertive objective decision making - during design, build, and commissioning stages.
• Perform engineering calculations to validate functionality, component sizing, speeds / rates, failure modes, etc. to ensure the designed solution will be feasible, robust, and reliable.
• Produce 2D assembly and manufacturing drawings, pneumatic schematics, and assist with required deliverable documentation.
• Responsible for the mechanical BOM including vendor and material selection with SCM, DFMA review with build, identification of long-lead items, and adherence to mechanical budgets.
• Provide support (at times being hands on), during the manufacturing and build stages including troubleshooting, problem solving, and debugging to overcome any issues or challenges.
• Mentor and coach other mechanical resources to build technical capability across the team and develop the next generation of mechanical leads.
• Suggest improvements to standards, tools, and working practices, acting as a catalyst for continuous improvement within the CLS-OA business unit and across all CGX business units.
• Given the nature of the work, employees occasionally work over weekends or outside of standard business hours as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

• Significant mechanical engineering experience in a leadership role within a relevant industry — typically 8–10+ years — including capital equipment and custom automation systems, with a track record of delivering complex projects from concept to FAT/SAT acceptance.
• Post-secondary Degree/Diploma in Engineering from a recognized engineering faculty.
• Demonstrated technical leadership: a portfolio of projects in which you made significant contributions to design analysis, functional planning, risk assessment, acceptance test plans, and third-party qualification.
• Sound analytical and problem-solving skills; organised and able to multi-task and prioritise in a demanding, fast-paced environment, and to operate effectively under pressure.
• Proficient with sanitary design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack up, and component selection based on functional design needs and requirements.
• Experience with cycle time analysis/simulations, process and flow breakdowns, and the development of critical requirements / specifications to drive design solutions.
• Deep knowledge of machine safety risk assessments and standards (CSA/CE, ANSI/RIA, OSHA)
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present to and influence internal teams, customers, and vendor partners at all levels.
• Ability to work independently and execute responsibilities with minor supervision.
• Proven ability to mentor and develop engineers and to create alignment between stakeholders while maintaining a positive working environment.
• Expert level of proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD, PDM, and TotalETO.
• An ability to travel; although this position is focused on local clients and minimal travel is required, incumbent should have the ability to travel within US and Canada

Desirable

• Experience in food, consumer packaged goods, and general manufacturing industries
• Experience in high-speed automation, preferably in the Medical Device, Pharmaceutical, or broader Life Sciences industry.
• Working knowledge and practical application of project management planning methodologies.
• Exposure to best practices and methodologies used by electrical, build, and controls groups.
• Multidisciplinary team player with the ability to work on fast-paced projects and multiple objectives while collaborating with internal teams, customers, and vendors.
• A professional, proactive, and positive attitude and work ethic with a commitment to excellence
• Works well with a variety of different people from diverse backgrounds

Physical Demands

• While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel objects, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, talk and hear.
• Occasionally lifts or move up to 25 pounds.
