Job Description

Senior Mechanical Engineer Position Summary:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer with thermal experience will be responsible for the mechanical and thermal content of the Product Architecture Playbook (PAP) for IT infrastructure systems. This role defines and maintains system-level requirements, standards, and architectural guidance, and drives their adoption across product lines and business units. Working closely with engineering, product management, and standards teams, the position translates lessons learned, industry requirements, and emerging technologies into practical guidance and best practices for new product development, including both liquid and air-cooling technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, define, and document system-level mechanical and thermal architecture requirements for rack- and row-based products, aisle containment, wall-mount products, and supporting infrastructure – covering interoperability, serviceability, manufacturability, and integration of air and liquid cooling technologies.
  • Drive standardization and interoperability across product lines and business units by defining common mechanical and thermal interfaces, design principles, and architectural requirements. Align teams that operate independently to a shared framework.
  • Review mechanical architectures, layouts, and integration concepts to identify and mitigate compatibility, serviceability, manufacturability, and thermal risks, and provide recommendations to support design decisions.
  • Develop and review 3D models and assemblies (Creo) to identify and resolve mechanical conflicts, validate compatibility, and confirm alignment with PAP standards.
  • Collaborate with development and simulation teams to evaluate mechanical and thermal compatibility and integration of system components, ensuring alignment with established standards and guidelines.
  • Evaluate product interactions at the system level and provide recommendations to improve integration, reliability, interoperability, serviceability, and customer deployment experience.
  • Establish, maintain, and communicate the PAP mechanical/thermal sections – author and update system-level requirements, standards, and architectural guidance, ensuring effective adoption across Business Units.
  • Translate lessons learned into reusable guidance – capture integration challenges, technical requirements, and field feedback from product development projects and codify them into standards, best practices, and architectural playbook entries.
  • Clarify and adapt existing mechanical and thermal design guidelines to ensure system-level applicability, compliance with applicable standards and regulations (including ASHRAE, ISO, and energy codes), and practical implementation in new product developments.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in thermal management, including liquid cooling, airflow management, and new materials. Contribute technical expertise to the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies, materials, and automation approaches for next-generation data center solutions.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation related to mechanical integration, compatibility studies, and design reviews.
  • Manage multiple ongoing projects and shift priorities as situations arise.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical and/or thermal design, systems engineering, or architecture development – preferably in IT infrastructure or data center industries
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (Creo preferred); ability to create and critically review models and assemblies
  • Experience interpreting thermal simulation results (e.g., CFD)
  • Working knowledge of both liquid and air-cooling technologies at the system level
  • Understanding of system-level architecture, interoperability, serviceability, and manufacturability principles
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards (ASHRAE, ASME, ANSI, ISO, OSHA, ISTA, applicable building and energy codes)
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive alignment without direct authority
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and shift priorities as needed
  • Experience developing or maintaining engineering standards, design guidelines, or architectural reference documents is preferred
  • Background in cross-business-unit governance or standards harmonization is preferred
  • Experience working across geographies (North America, Europe, Asia) is a plus
