Job Description

Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Buildings team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to support the design and delivery of complex, multidisciplinary building projects. This role is ideal for an experienced mechanical designer who combines strong technical expertise with advanced BIM capabilities, project leadership, and a solid understanding of constructability.

You will independently lead mechanical design efforts, coordinate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors, and provide technical guidance to other designers while supporting projects from early design through construction.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Independently manage mechanical drafting and design efforts for multiple large-scale projects with minimal supervision.
  • Lead groups of designers on complex, multidisciplinary projects.
  • Manage priorities and workload effectively to meet project schedules and deadlines.
  • Coordinate mechanical design activities across multiple buildings on large site-based projects.
  • Share best practices and provide technical guidance to mechanical design staff.
  • Prepare preliminary mechanical system layouts for engineering review.
  • Perform fundamental engineering calculations, including pressure drop, air changes per hour, and pump head calculations.
  • Create and maintain piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Develop flow schematics based on prior design experience for use by junior designers.
  • Develop spatial requirements for mechanical rooms, mechanical yards, and central plants during schematic design.
  • Coordinate mechanical equipment placement, connection points, maintenance clearances, positioning, and customization requirements.
  • Propose practical design solutions to architects, engineers, and other MEP disciplines.
  • Apply applicable local, national, and international mechanical codes throughout the design process.
  • Lead high-level BIM coordination efforts for multidisciplinary projects.
  • Develop mechanical models in Revit and publish coordinated models to cloud-based collaboration platforms.
  • Perform clash detection and resolve coordination issues to project-specified tolerances, including zero-tolerance requirements when applicable.
  • Identify and resolve design conflicts early through model coordination and constructability reviews.
  • Develop coordinated, constructible models suitable for issued-for-construction handoff.
  • Navigate and implement client-specific BIM standards and requirements.
  • Organize and maintain BIM-related project documentation.
  • Create project-specific Revit content, including smart schedules, families, and components.
  • Coordinate with vendors on large equipment selections and mechanical room development.
  • Support construction administration activities, including shop drawing reviews.
  • Communicate mechanical design intent to clients and coordinate solutions with mechanical contractors during construction administration.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Navisworks, Revizto, and other BIM applications.
  • Ability to serve as a technical resource for BIM-related questions, workflows, and troubleshooting.
  • Firsthand experience serving as a project administrator in Autodesk Forma.
  • Familiarity with COBie requirements.
  • Experience working on complex projects involving more than 20 Revit links.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical building systems, equipment, and applicable mechanical codes.
  • Strong understanding of constructability priorities and multidisciplinary coordination sequencing.
  • Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar mechanical systems and project requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong BIM software troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Demonstrated initiative, commitment to excellence, and desire to expand technical knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in both verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, and multidisciplinary project teams.

Education and Experience

  • Eight or more years of progressive mechanical design experience, including experience at the senior designer level.
  • Demonstrated experience leading mechanical design and BIM efforts on large-scale projects.
  • Experience across multiple market sectors.
  • Experience supporting projects from schematic design through construction documentation and construction administration.
  • Technical degree, diploma, or equivalent combination of education and relevant mechanical design experience preferred.
