We are looking for an Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our R&D team developing Lithium-ion battery systems for industrial applications. In this role, you will lead mechanical design activities, guide and mentor junior engineers, and ensure that new battery products meet the highest standards of performance, manufacturability, and quality.

You will collaborate closely with electrical engineering, industrialization, quality, and testing teams to deliver robust and innovative solutions for battery packs, modules, and mechanical sub-systems.

  • Lead the design of parts, assemblies, and sub-systems using 3D/2D CAD tools (injection molded enclosures, sheet metal, HPDC castings etc.)
  • Define and validate system architecture and packaging concepts for battery packs
  • Drive product feasibility, mechanical integration, and spatial optimization
  • Ensure proper application of DFM (Design for Manufacturing) and DFA guidelines
  • Perform engineering analysis including stress, strain, structural integrity, and tolerance evaluation
  • Validate design assumptions and make data-driven decisions
  • Create and review technical documentation, drawings, and design releases
  • Own engineering change requests (ECP) and ensure accurate BOM structures (CAD & ERP/SAP)
  • Work with Industrialization to ensure a smooth transition to production
  • Provide technical input to Quality, Testing, and Product Management
  • Lead DFMEA sessions and contribute to risk-mitigation actions
  • Support prototype builds, testing campaigns, and root cause analysis
  • Guide and support junior and mid-level mechanical engineers
  • Review designs, documentation, and analysis produced by the team

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field)
  • At least 5 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in energy storage, automotive, industrial equipment, or electro-mechanical systems
  • Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent)
  • Experience with manufacturing processes: sheet metal, machining, castings, and plastics
  • Experience with high-voltage battery systems or power electronics enclosures, is considered a plus
  • Familiarity with SAP or PLM systems for BOM and lifecycle management, is considered a plus
  • Experience in DFMEA and structured problem solving, is considered a plus
  • Good understanding of thermal management and sealing (IP ratings), is considered a plus
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to lead projects and mentor team members
  • Proactive, structured, and solution-oriented mindset
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, development-driven environments
  • Excellent written and verbal knowledge of English. Knowledge of an additional language is a plus

Sunlight Group's research project is included in the European Battery Innovation – EuBatIn, which is an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). The scope of the project includes the research and development of battery systems (WS3) that will make use of the lithium-ion cells developed in the first stage of the project (WS2).
