The opportunity

CSIRO Publishing is Australia’s leading publisher of scientific, technical, and health journals, books, and science news. We are seeking a dynamic Senior Marketing Manager to drive CSIRO Publishing’s influence and commercial success. You will develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies to expand discoverability and audience reach grow revenue across journals, books, and digital platforms, and strengthen brand visibility and trust. This is a pivotal leadership role, requiring creativity, strategic thinking, and an audience-first approach, with a strong focus on supporting and growing our author community.

Your high-level duties will include:

  • Develop and deliver marketing strategies aligned with business goals to grow revenue, reach, readership, submissions, and brand awareness.
  • Plan and manage multi-channel campaigns (e.g., email, newsletters, social media, advertising).
  • Use data insights and agreed KPIs to evaluate campaign effectiveness and refine approaches.
  • Drive digital transformation, system improvements, and automation.
  • Identify target audiences and craft messaging to drive engagement and grow audiences and attract and support authors.
  • Promote content to increase engagement, downloads, citations, and revenue.
  • Conduct market and customer research to identify trends and actionable strategies.
  • Build and manage budgets for conferences and marketing spend.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing marketing team, fostering innovation and professional growth.
  • Manage brand integrity and governance, ensuring compliance with CSIRO Publishing’s brand guidelines.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to develop marketing collateral and communication plans.
  • Oversee conference representation and promotional activities.
  • Prepare reports, including annual and board reports.
  • Adhere to CSIRO’s Values, Code of Conduct, and diversity initiatives.

Role particulars

Location: Melbourne (Clayton) VIC, other CSIRO sites around Australia considered

Salary: AU$118k – AU$127k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

  • Relevant degree or substantial experience in scholarly publishing marketing including journals.
  • Demonstrated experience designing effective marketing strategies and campaigns.
  • Proficiency with digital marketing platforms, social media management, and content creation.
  • Strong collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail to minimise risk and protect brand integrity and organisational reputation.
