About the role:

The Senior Market Risk Advisor is a key member of the Market Risk Advisory team, providing independent market risk oversight for Shell Energy Asia and EPTB East trading businesses. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Market Risk Advisory Asia, this individual contributor role is responsible for delivering independent analysis of portfolio valuation, risk exposure, and risk-reward profiles across trading portfolios and proposed transactions, supporting informed and effective business decision-making.

To be successful in this role, you will bring strong expertise in market risk analytics, including statistical analysis, long-term curve modelling and validation, option modelling, and energy market fundamentals. You will also possess a solid understanding of portfolio management across varying liquidity environments, risk mitigation strategies, accounting principles, process controls, and Energy Trading and Risk Management (ETRM) systems and processes.

The individual must be able to work independently and must have excellent communication skills as the function sits in a virtual “hub” of the organization and must effectively coordinate with cross functional teams, including commercial, finance, accounting, IT, and offshore support.

The role will provide risk assessments and insights to a wide range of stakeholders while collaborating with colleagues across Finance and Risk Management teams. The Energy Market Risk Team provides an independent view to help improve Shell’s risk/reward analysis in service of making optimal decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an independent understanding of the trading strategies employed by the desk, the pricing exposures and P&L generated by the trade book, and the key drivers of value generation.

  • Assess new deals and proposed transactions across power, gas, LNG, and environmental products to ensure associated market risks are identified, understood, and appropriately considered.

  • Build effective relationships with Market Risk Financial Operations and other support teams to deliver as one team, including review of daily risk reports and reasonableness of mark-to-market valuations, positions, and risk metrics against the approved risk appetite.

  • Understand key price indices used by the desks and the construction of forward curves, facilitating review of forward curves and proposing alternative data sources or approaches where appropriate.

  • Work with Valuation, Quantitative Analytics, and other specialist teams to assess market risks, valuation approaches, and embedded optionality across physical and financial portfolios.

  • Execute market risk controls under relevant performance and risk policy frameworks, including limit monitoring, exception analysis, and support for design of controls for new businesses or deal types.

  • Analyse market risk exposures and risk metrics to ensure they are properly understood, evaluated, and clearly communicated to stakeholders, with issues escalated in a timely manner.

  • Apply and help deepen understanding of methodologies used to assess portfolio risk and reward, including VaR, back-testing, stress testing, scenario analysis, and liquidity analysis.

  • Investigate and explain changes in positions, P&L, mark-to-market, and risk metrics by analysing the underlying portfolio and market drivers.

  • Support risk appetite implementation by monitoring compliance with approved market risk limits and escalating breaches or unusual exposures in accordance with established governance.

  • Collaborate with IT and other teams to identify, develop, and implement continuous improvement initiatives relating to risk analytics, controls, and reporting for the businesses supported.

What we need from you

  • Degree in a quantitative discipline such as Accounting, Business, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, or another relevant field.

  • Relevant commodity market risk or energy trading experience, ideally covering power, gas, LNG, or environmental products.

  • Strong understanding of trading, operations, risk, and mid- or back-office business processes, including relevant policies, procedures, and controls.

  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to interpret positions, P&L, mark-to-market, and risk metrics, and draw clear conclusions from the analysis.

  • Good understanding of commodity market fundamentals, derivative instruments, and hedging concepts across physical and financial energy portfolios.

  • Hands-on experience with risk analytics, valuation concepts, forward curve interpretation, or modelling of commodity structures would be an advantage.

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced trading environment while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to prioritise multiple deliverables and manage competing demands with a structured and disciplined approach.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive stakeholder relationships across Commercial, Finance, Operations, IT, and Risk.

  • Able to operate independently from front office and provide objective analysis and constructive challenge on exposures, valuations, and risk management practices.

  • Experience with ETRM systems and Microsoft Excel is preferred; experience with data tools or analytics languages would be beneficial.

  • Confidence and credibility to engage stakeholders and escalate concerns appropriately where exposures, valuation issues, or control weaknesses are identified.

  • Self-motivated individual who functions well in a dynamic and sometimes unstructured environment.

  • A collaborative working style and willingness to work across time zones and functions in support of regional portfolios.

  • This role is suited to a strong individual contributor who combines sound technical analysis with practical judgement and effective stakeholder engagement.
