
We are seeking a talented and experienced professional to lead our Treasury department as the Senior Manager. In this role, you will be responsible for the overall management of treasury operations, including forex and cash management, and establishing strong banking relationships to support our business objectives. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring the company's financial stability and optimal utilization of cash resources.
Role purpose:
Efficient management of the company’s liquidity, funding, financial risk and treasury operation across group companies in line with approved policies. This includes secure investment of cash resources as well as providing or securing the financial resources required by Safaricom and its subsidiaries to meet their business objectives in a timely, cost-efficient and secure manner.
Efficient management of all treasury operations including forex and cash management; ensuring the company has the best banking products and services for its operations; responsibility for all banking relationships; accurate cash flow forecast reporting.
Key accountabilities and decision ownership:
A. Treasury policy, governance and internal controls
• Implement and update Treasury policies covering forex, cash management, banking procedures, and actualization for cash flow forecasting, in line with industry best practice, Group policy, Board approvals and local regulations.
• Ensure appropriate procedures are in place to safeguard receipt of monies, prompt banking, and immediate detection and escalation of non-compliance.
• Ensure the adherence to approval mandates for all payments, interbank and intercompany fund transfers, and report any breach to senior management.
• Ensure all payment requests for goods, services, and statutory/duty payments are appropriately supported by invoices and required documentation, and that payments are made only to legitimate parties using approved vendor master data.
B. Liquidity, cash flow forecasting and cash management
• Implement budgeted cash flow forecasts and monitor ongoing liquidity requirements across the company and subsidiaries.
• Ensure preparation and actualization of cash flow forecasts on agreed periodic basis, including variance analysis and explanation between forecast and actual cash flow.
• Ensure timely execution of payments in line with cash forecasts and agreed plans, avoiding missed payments and unnecessary costs.
• Drive maximum automation of cash management and bank reconciliation.
C. Banking operations, reconciliation and payment systems
• Ensure bank reconciliation for all bank ledger accounts is performed strictly in accordance with the Bank Reconciliation Policy and variances are resolved expeditiously
• Ensure banking procedures, technology specifications, and instructions are properly communicated to banks and implemented to secure electronic receipts and payment processed.
• Ensure the electronic payment system runs smoothly, including oversight of generation, review, approval, and transfer of electronic payment files.
D. Funding and financial risk
• Participate in sourcing borrowings and ensure compliance with all borrowing requirements and covenants, monitor repayment obligations and funding conditions.
• Develop mechanisms to identify and monitor FX exposures (e.g., when commitments are raised and economic exposure periods) and recommend hedging/cover actions as appropriate.
E. Cash investment and return optimization
• Identify opportunities for investment of excess cash (short- and long-term) and negotiate optimal yield rates from the market, including for Mpesa Trust accounts.
• Monitor bank charges and pricing and actively negotiate to secure best possible rates and banking products for the business.
F. External environment monitoring and advisory
• Monitor economic indicators and trends in Ethiopia (interest rates, forex rates, inflation), banking sector health/risk profile, and National Bank of Ethiopia regulations, and ensure the CFO is updated with timely insights and recommendations.
G. People management and capacity building
• Lead, coach and develop treasury staff; align performance indicators, manage workload, and ensure staff development, motivation, discipline and wellbeing.

Nil incidents of non-compliance with Treasury policies, approval mandates (DOA), and regulatory requirements; breaches detected and escalated immediately.
B Cash forecasting and liquidity management
Cash flow forecasts prepared and actualized on agreed periodic basis with documented variance explanations.
Forecast accuracy maintained at an agreed target level (e.g., monthly variance within tolerance levels) and continuously improved through automation and better data capture.
Daily cash position reporting produced clear day-on-day movement explanations and liquidity risks escalated proactively.
Zero missed critical payments (e.g., debt service, contractual and statutory payments) due to treasury execution failure.
C. Banking operations and reconciliation quality
100% of bank reconciliations completed, reviewed and approved within the timelines set in the Bank Reconciliation Policy
Reconciling items followed up and resolved within agreed SLA; no long-outstanding reconciling items.
Direct reports:
3-5 year(s) at a manager level extensive experience in treasury operation such as bank reconciliations, managing multiple bank accounts including retail collection accounts and complex treasury and banking payment systems.
