Job Description

The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners with every part of the American Express business to power the company’s growth and innovation with trust and efficiency, and drive competitive differentiation with speed. We support the delivery and operations of technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. Specifically, our team is responsible for the company’s technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, providing 24x7 support to ensure an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. We also provide product management for core enterprise platforms, and lead technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms on behalf of the company.

As our Senior Technical Project Manager, you will join our Global Merchant and Network Services Technology team that has embarked on building a highly available and scalable distributed systems on the cloud to support the company's long-term strategy and vision. Drive execution across multiple Scrum teams, ensuring product backlog priorities are clearly defined, aligned to stakeholder needs, and delivered with high quality.

Key Initiatives:

  • Card Network Authorizations/Routing, Clearing and Settlement.
  • ATM, Debit, Credit and Push Payment Transactions.
  • Platform Engineering and Foundational Capabilities of distributed systems
  • High Availability, Resiliency and Performance Engineering on Cloud
  • Drive execution across multiple Scrum teams, ensuring product backlog priorities are clearly defined, aligned to stakeholder needs, and delivered with high quality
  • Own end-to-end backlog readiness, refinement, and decomposition into clear, testable, and demonstrable sprint deliverables
  • Ensure strong alignment between Product Owners, stakeholders, and engineering teams so that delivered work meets intended outcomes and business value
  • Ensure backlog quality, including generating acceptance criteria, identifying gaps, surfacing edge cases, and improving requirement clarity before development begins
  • Accelerate decision-making, reduce ambiguity, and improve delivery consistency
  • Facilitate Scrum ceremonies and actively shape sprint plans to ensure achievable, outcome-driven commitments
  • Monitor and improve delivery metrics such as velocity, predictability, and quality.
  • Rapidly identify and resolve blockers to maintain momentum across multiple teams
  • Drive consistent standards for backlog hygiene, definition of ready, and definition of done
  • Lead Program Increment planning sessions, coordinate with interfacing teams for successful PI
  • Solve dependencies between multiple work streams for common delivery goals.
  • Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and resolve issues that could impact program delivery.
  • Monitor progress and performance metrics to maintain quality and timelines
  • Oversee program budgets, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure projects are delivered within scope and financial constraints
  • Prepare dashboards, reports, and presentations to track program metrics, communicate updates, and support decision-making for senior management
  • Foster collaboration, lead technical discussions, and guide teams through complex problem-solving, ensuring engineering productivity and program success
  • 12+ years of experience as a Technical Project Manager/ Scrum Master/ Business Analyst within a large enterprise software engineering environment
  • 5+ Program Management experience
  • Demonstrated experience managing and refining product backlogs to deliver measurable, stakeholder-aligned outcomes in financial services or other regulated industries
  • Strong understanding of Agile and Scrum methodologies with experience supporting multiple teams through transformations.
  • Proven ability to translate complex requirements into clear, actionable, and testable engineering work
  • Hands-on experience using Rally, JIRA tools
  • Strong communication and stakeholder alignment skills, with a focus on clarity and accountability
  • High attention to detail and a strong bias toward quality and execution and ability to hold teams accountable for delivery in a positive manner
  • Familiarity with developer platforms, APIs, or shared services models
  • Experience scaling Agile delivery practices across multiple teams and overcoming adoption challenges
  • Master's Degree in management or computer science or engineering or a related discipline is strongly desired.
