The opportunity

Join EY's Tax Controversy Practice as a Senior Manager and play a leading role in helping clients navigate complex tax matters, manage engagements with revenue authorities, and achieve effective dispute prevention and resolution outcomes.

In this role, you will advise a diverse client portfolio, including ASX-listed companies, multinational organisations, privately owned businesses, and high-net-worth individuals. You will work on technically challenging matters while partnering closely with clients and colleagues across service lines to deliver practical, commercially focused solutions.

This is a hybrid position based in Naarm - Melbourne, Warrang -Sydney, Boorloo – Perth or Meanjin – Brisbane. Our roles can potentially be adjusted to work flexibly with reduced hours. Please speak with us about potential options.

Your key responsibilities

As a trusted advisor and leader within the team, you will:

• Lead and advise clients on interactions with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) helping them navigate reviews, audits, disputes, and regulatory engagements.
• Manage complex tax controversy matters, including objections, private binding ruling applications, litigation, alternative dispute resolution processes, and other strategic resolution pathways.
• Provide clear, practical advice on technical tax and tax administration issues through robust legal and tax research, analysis, and problem solving.
• Build strong client relationships while developing and mentoring team members, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and high-quality client service outcomes.

Skills and attributes for success

We're looking for individuals who bring strong technical capability, sound professional judgement, and a collaborative approach to client service.

• A law degree and admission to practise in Australia, together with relevant post-qualification experience.
• Strong tax technical knowledge and legal research capabilities.
• The ability to interpret complex issues, think critically, and apply technical concepts in practical and commercially effective ways.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively.
• Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities across different clients, engagements, and deadlines.
• A collaborative leadership style and a commitment to developing and supporting others.

Ideally, you'll also bring:

• Experience gained within a tax advisory, tax controversy, legal, professional services, or similar environment.
• A solution-focused mindset and strong problem-solving capability.
• Curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to broaden your experience across a variety of tax controversy matters and client situations.
