Job Description

National Supply Chain Manager

Downer Rail & Transit Systems is a leader in train manufacturing and rolling stock maintenance across Australia and New Zealand, delivering critical rail assets and life‑cycle services in safety‑critical environments.

We are seeking a delivery focused National Supply Chain Manager to lead supply chain, inventory management and purchasing functions supporting our manufacturing and maintenance operations. This role is suited to a senior leader who brings transformation experience and modern supply chain expertise, with the ability to review, assess and progressively evolve capability over time.

The Role

The role has end‑to‑end accountability for national supply chain performance across train manufacturing sites, maintenance depots, supplier networks and customer locations. Inventory management, purchasing and supply chain reporting teams report into this position.

You will ensure assured material availability, strong inventory control and reliable purchasing outcomes, while applying your experience to identify improvement opportunities supported by data, digital tools and emerging technologies, including AI—introduced thoughtfully and in line with business readiness.

Regular travel across the East Coast of Australia is required to engage with operational teams, suppliers and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead national supply chain strategy aligned with train manufacturing and maintenance operations
  • Oversee purchasing, inventory management, supply chain reporting, replenishment, logistics and stock control
  • Review current supply chain maturity and identify opportunities for optimisation and uplift
  • Apply modern supply chain and data‑driven practices to inform improvement initiatives
  • Lead and develop a high‑performing national supply chain, inventory and purchasing team
  • Improve performance across availability, inventory health, cost, accuracy, waste and supplier outcomes
  • Build strong supplier partnerships, particularly across engineered and long‑lead materials
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Engineering, Planning, Logistics, Finance, IT and Commercial teams

About You

You are a senior supply chain leader with experience in manufacturing and/or rolling stock or transport industry related. You will bring sound commercial judgement, comfort with complexity, and experience contributing to transformation initiatives—balanced with the ability to evaluate, prioritise and sequence change, rather than force it.

Why Downer

  • Senior leadership role within an ASX‑listed rail and infrastructure organisation
  • Opportunity to shape and evolve national supply chain capability
  • Work closely with manufacturing and maintenance teams on critical rail assets
  • A strong Zero Harm safety culture at the core of everything we do
