Engineering Manager, Software Development

About the Team and Role

At eBay, we connect millions of buyers and sellers around the world, creating opportunities through technology and commerce. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager, Software Development to lead a talented team building scalable, reliable, and high-performing applications for one of the world’s largest online marketplaces.

In this role, you’ll combine people leadership, technical depth, and execution excellence. You’ll develop engineering talent, guide architecture and technical direction, and partner with Product, Design, Platform, and other engineering teams to deliver impactful customer experiences at global scale.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and Develop Engineers: Manage, coach, and grow a high-performing engineering team while fostering a culture of ownership, inclusion, collaboration, and continuous learning.

• Drive Technical Direction: Partner with senior engineers to guide architecture and design of scalable, distributed, resilient, and secure systems.

• Own End-to-End Delivery: Lead the complete software lifecycle—from design and development through testing, deployment, production operations, and continuous improvement.

• Build at Global Scale: Guide the development of high-volume services, APIs, and applications serving millions of eBay customers.

• Champion Engineering Excellence: Drive strong practices around code quality, automated testing, security, performance, observability, and reliability.

• Drive Operational Excellence: Establish effective CI/CD, production readiness, monitoring, incident management, and operational ownership.

• Partner Cross-Functionally: Collaborate with Product, Design, Platform, and other teams to translate business priorities into clear technical strategies and execution plans.

• Improve Engineering Productivity: Drive automation, simplify development workflows, and adopt technologies—including AI-powered engineering tools—that improve developer productivity and delivery velocity.

• Build and Grow Talent: Hire strong engineers, mentor team members, develop future technical leaders, and create meaningful career growth opportunities.

What You’ll Bring

• 12+ years of software engineering experience building scalable, high-volume applications and distributed systems.

• 5+ years of engineering management experience, with a proven track record of leading and developing high-performing teams.

• Strong technical background in Java, Python, Node.js, or similar modern programming languages.

• Experience designing and delivering microservices, REST APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.

• Experience with technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, cloud platforms, RDBMS/NoSQL databases, and observability solutions.

• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, reliability, performance, security, and operational excellence.

• Experience leading teams with end-to-end ownership of the software they build and operate.

• Ability to balance technical strategy, people leadership, delivery priorities, and long-term engineering investments.

• Excellent communication and influencing skills with experience working across product, engineering, and globally distributed teams.

Nice to Have

• Experience with commerce, payments, financial services, or other high-volume transactional systems.

• Experience with modern frontend or mobile technologies such as React, iOS, or Android.

• Experience applying AI/ML or AI-assisted development tools to product or engineering challenges.

• Contributions to open-source technologies or the broader engineering community.

Education

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
