Job Description

About Us

At ANZ, we're shaping a world where people and communities thrive, driven by a common goal: to improve the financial wellbeing and sustainability of our millions of customers.

About the Role

The Senior Manager - Operational Risk exists to provide second line oversight of non-financial and operational risks across Enterprise Finance Value Chain activities. The role will be focussed on specific elements of the value chain. It supports independent review, challenge and advice on risk identification, the quality of risk assessments, and control design and effectiveness across processes, systems and data where relevant.

The role provides risk insight and analysis to support governance and decision-making, promotes adherence to risk and compliance frameworks, and identifies and escalates material control gaps where effectiveness is insufficient. The role works closely with business stakeholders and senior risk partners, applying sound judgement while remaining independent of first line ownership of controls, remediation delivery and operational execution. To be successful in this role you should be able to apply practical risk judgement across business and enabling function contexts.

Role Type: Permanent
Role Location: Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane
Work Hours: Full-Time

What will your day look like?

  • Support second line oversight for designated Enterprise Finance Value Chain risk matters
  • Review and challenge material risks, risk assessments and control design and effectiveness across end-to-end processes, systems and data across designated Enterprise Finance value chain activities.
  • Provide clear risk opinions on framework application, control effectiveness and the quality of first line risk management
  • Prioritise activity toward the most material risks, themes and control weaknesses using a risk-based approach
  • Identify and escalate material control gaps, weaknesses or inefficiencies where effectiveness is insufficient
  • Review and challenge material issues and incidents, including escalation in line with Group protocols
  • Assess root cause analysis and whether proposed remediation addresses underlying drivers and reduces residual risk
  • Monitor remediation progress and sustainability, escalating where delivery is at risk or outcomes are not achieved
  • Provide clear, practical risk advice and insight to stakeholders and governance forums, supporting informed decision-making
  • Prepare and review committee papers and risk reporting, ensuring key messages, risk positions and recommendations are clear and evidence based
  • Support risk acceptance and governance processes, ensuring appropriate delegated authorities are applied and concerns are escalated where required
  • Review and challenge risk appetite statements, indicators and control metrics to support effective monitoring
  • Use data, analysis and available tooling to identify risk trends, emerging issues and areas requiring deeper review

What will you bring?

  • 7+ years’ experience in financial services, operational risk, compliance, audit or related disciplines
  • Strong understanding of non-financial risk frameworks, operational risk and regulatory expectations
  • Experience in reviewing risk assessments, control design and control effectiveness, and applying sound risk judgement in business contexts
  • Demonstrated ability to provide constructive challenge and practical risk advice to business stakeholders
  • Good understanding of the Enterprise Finance environment in the designated Finance value chain activities.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, including the ability to assess evidence, identify themes and recommend actions
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise risk reporting and present views confidently
