The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Queens Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems, the Bureau of Finance and Administrative Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Equity Officer and oversees Race to Justice, the Agency's internal reform effort to help our staff learn what they can do to better address racial health gaps and improve health outcomes for all New Yorkers. The Health Department launched Race to Justice (RTJ) in 2016 as its agency-wide internal transformation initiative. The primary purpose of the initiative is to build the Health Department's capacity to address structural racism and health inequities by promoting anti racism and embedding racial equity and social justice in our policies, processes, and programs, ensuring that our internal and external practices reflect our values without perpetuating injustices. Spearheaded by the RTJMT, the initiative aims to transform the Health Department by building capacity and embedding racial equity and social justice within every aspect of DOHMH to ultimately improve equitable health outcomes for all New Yorkers by: 1) Increasing staff's awareness of how racism and other intersecting systems of oppression operate within institutions, with the knowledge and understanding that NYC institutions, with the knowledge and understanding that NYC institutions, including the Health Department, are not separate and immune from these systemic injustices. 2) Developing staff's skills to address how internal systems of
oppression create health equities. 3) Examining how structural racism and other intersecting systems of oppression impact the Health Department's work, decisions, interactions, and priorities. 4) Implementing policies and practices to mitigate the impacts of systems of oppression.
