As the Senior Manager, Field Application Scientists, you will lead a high-performing team responsible for delivering world-class scientific expertise and technical support across the Bioproduction portfolio. This leadership role combines scientific excellence, customer focus, strategic thinking, and commercial acumen to drive customer success, accelerate business growth, and strengthen organizational capability.
Working closely with Sales, Marketing, Product Management, R&D, Manufacturing, and regional leadership, you will develop and execute strategies that enhance customer experience, expand market presence, and support the successful adoption of Thermo Fisher solutions. You will provide leadership across the entire customer journey—from scientific consultation and solution design through implementation, training, and long-term customer success.
Beyond leading the Field Application Scientists organization, you will play a key role in business development by identifying new growth opportunities, supporting strategic account expansion, establishing relationships with scientific and technical leaders within customer organizations, and influencing commercial strategy through customer insights and market intelligence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Organization Development
Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of Field Application Scientists through effective performance management, mentoring, and succession planning.
Foster an inclusive, collaborative, customer-focused culture that promotes innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Build organizational capability by developing future technical leaders and strengthening employee engagement.
Customer Success & Scientific Leadership
Provide strategic scientific leadership throughout the customer lifecycle, including pre-sales consultation, solution design, implementation, troubleshooting, training, and post-sales support.
Ensure exceptional customer experiences by aligning technical support strategies with customer needs and business objectives.
Serve as the executive technical sponsor for strategic customer engagements and complex technical discussions.
Lead customer education initiatives, workshops, seminars, and scientific training programs.
Business Development & Commercial Partnership
Partner with Commercial leadership to develop and execute strategies that accelerate revenue growth and expand market share.
Identify and develop new business opportunities by supporting strategic account planning and new customer acquisition initiatives.
Build and maintain strong relationships with scientific leaders, technical decision-makers, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) within customer organizations to strengthen long-term partnerships and generate new business opportunities.
Collaborate with Sales to support strategic opportunities, competitive positioning, and major customer engagements.
Contribute technical expertise to pipeline development, opportunity qualification, and business planning.
Cross-functional Leadership
Partner closely with Sales, Marketing, Product Management, R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Service organizations to successfully execute business initiatives and product launches.
Represent the Voice of the Customer by translating customer insights into product improvements, application development priorities, and commercial strategies.
Act as a key member of the regional Commercial Leadership Team to support business planning and execution.
Operational Excellence
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to customer satisfaction, technical effectiveness, team performance, and business impact.
Drive operational excellence through continuous process improvement and data-driven decision making.
Ensure compliance with company policies, quality standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree with 12+ years of relevant experience, or Bachelor's degree with 15+ years of relevant experience in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
15+ years of experience in Field Applications, Technical Support, Process Development, Scientific Consulting, or customer-facing roles within the Bioproduction or Life Sciences industry.
3–5 years of people management experience leading technical or customer-facing teams.
Strong technical knowledge of bioproduction workflows, cell culture, protein expression, purification, and related applications.
Demonstrated success in customer engagement, business development, and strategic account growth.
Strong understanding of commercial processes, solution selling, and customer relationship management.
Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams and collaborate across a matrix organization.
Strong analytical, project management, and organizational skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM platforms.
Willingness to travel up to 40–50%.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. or advanced degree in Life Sciences or a related discipline.
Experience supporting upstream and/or downstream bioprocessing applications.
Established network within the biopharmaceutical or bioprocessing industry.
Experience working with strategic accounts and key opinion leaders.
Knowledge of GMP manufacturing, quality systems, and regulated environments.
Additional language proficiency is a plus.
