Job Description

The Senior Library Collections Assistant is responsible for ordering all monographic materials, print and online using the current vendor platforms, GOBI and Amazon, working closely with liaison librarians. The Senior Library Collections Assistant works cooperatively with library faculty, staff and student assistants to deliver excellent library service to the Widener community.

Reporting to the Head of Collections & Resource Management, the Senior Library Collections Assistant is responsible for the daily operations of the Acquisitions Department. Assists in formulating department policies, procedures, and workflows.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential Duties:

  • Orders all monographic materials, print and digital, using the current vendor platforms, GOBI and Amazon, as requested by liaison librarians.
  • Maintains electronic records using the FOLIO Library Management System.
  • Maintains statistics of cataloged materials added to the library collection
  • Works closely with the Head of Collections and Resource Management to pay invoices for all monographic acquisitions
  • Catalogs the materials on receipt, using OCLC Connexion and FOLIO’s Inventory App.
  • Deletes withdrawn material from OCLC and FOLIO, maintaining statistics of the withdrawn material
  • Processes and evaluates library withdrawn materials for recycling and/or shipping to redistributor.
  • Manages the McNaughton subscription and purchasing plan.
  • Trains the Library Collections Assistant.
  • Manages/supervises student workers.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Assists in providing support for events held in the library including reserving and arranging spaces, signage, and coffee/tea/light refreshments.
  • Works with library staff on special projects as needed.
  • Assists in staffing the Library Information Desk as needed.
  • Assists with Virtual Assistance Services

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Experience in an office setting or customer service environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as needed.
  • Familiarity with library services and resources.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies including generative AI.
  • Ability to organize own work on a daily basis within general guidelines and priorities.

Preferred:

  • Some graduate level education.
  • Library work experience, including volunteer or internship.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

  • Physical stamina to bend, stoop, carry books, and stand for periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Ability to work some flexible hours including nights and weekends, as needed.
