Join the legal team supporting Payments and Everyday Business Banking at CommBank.

We are a collaborative team of experienced lawyers advising on strategic initiatives, product innovation and complex legal and regulatory matters across banking, payments and digital channels.

We work closely with business stakeholders to support both new product development and the ongoing management of a significant portfolio of customer products and services.

This is an excellent opportunity for a senior lawyer looking to broaden their practice across payments, digital products and strategic business initiatives within a sophisticated in-house environment.

Do work that matters

We are looking for a commercially minded senior lawyer with strong financial services, commercial, technology or transactional experience who is interested in working across payments, digital products and regulatory matters.

You will advise on a broad range of matters, including:

  • payments, retail and business banking and financial services regulation
  • core transaction banking products including deposit accounts and payment acceptance
  • new payments, digital and technology-enabled products and services, including API-enabled and AI-supported solutions
  • customer terms and bespoke commercial agreements
  • strategic commercial transactions and complex contracting
  • regulatory change, risk and business transformation initiatives
  • customer issues including scams, complaints, breach reporting and remediation

You will collaborate closely with product, risk and compliance stakeholders and other legal teams, providing practical advice on complex and often novel issues in a fast-paced environment.

Prior payments experience is not essential. We are interested in lawyers with strong judgment, commerciality, adaptability and the curiosity to develop expertise in a dynamic and evolving area.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have

  • approximately 7–12 years’ relevant post admission experience, including at least 4 in private practice
  • experience advising on complex matters within financial services, payments, fintech or technology environments is desirable
  • a solid understanding of relevant regulatory frameworks such as financial services and payments regulation, privacy, AML, and consumer protection
  • strong legal judgment and technical capability, with the confidence to guide practical, compliant solutions where regulatory or customer risks arise
  • strong communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders across a broad range of functions and seniority levels
  • a collaborative and solutions-focused approach, with a genuine interest in technology and digital transformation
  • integrity, humility and a strong team mindset, including openness to feedback and peer review
