  • Partner with regulatory legal and compliance stakeholders to assess the impact of emerging legislation and regulatory developments.
  • Identify, evaluate, and mitigate legal and regulatory risks associated with lending activities.
  • Manage complex legal files independently, ensuring priorities, timelines, and stakeholder expectations are met.
  • Deliver practical, solution-oriented legal advice that supports business objectives while protecting the organization.
  • Engage and oversee external legal counsel when specialized expertise is required.
  • Build effective relationships with business leaders, lending teams, external counsel, and professional advisors.

About the qualifications:

  • LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial bar association.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian banking, lending, and financial services regulatory requirements.
  • 8+ years of legal experience within commercial real estate finance or the broader financial services industry.
  • Experience gained through a combination of private practice and in-house legal environments is preferred.

    • Commercial mortgage lending
    • Complex title and priority matters
    • Commercial title insurance
  • Established relationships within the Canadian commercial real estate legal community are considered an asset.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to provide thoughtful, risk-based legal advice.
  • Ability to translate complex legal matters into practical business guidance.
  • Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating sophisticated lending and security documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and advise non-legal stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage a demanding workload independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
  • Proactive, innovative, and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving.
