Job Description

About The Role:

The Senior Legal Counsel provides expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal, regulatory and reputational risks faced by HSBC in Thailand are identified, reported and mitigated. This role will report to the Country General Counsel.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing counsel and support primarily to the Corporate and Institutional Banking business, and their associated global functions including corporate finance, trade and payment products, global markets products and services including foreign exchange forward, option, swap transactions, and documents governing the trading of those products (e.g. ISDA, GMRA), and securities services (e.g. custody, escrow, fund supervisory, fund administration). Providing supplemental counsel and support to the International Wealth and Private Banking business, and its various initiatives.
  • Providing expert legal advice in relation to Corporate and Institutional Banking matters including drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts and related transaction documents.
  • Demonstrating a sound understanding of stakeholders, business partners and clients’ strategic priorities. Adopting a client centric mindset when applying expertise to deliver high quality services and commercial advice which meet relevant business standard.
  • Managing stakeholders’ expectations and demonstrating time management to contribute to a team culture of productive service and process improvement. Understading key commercial drivers and introducing better ways of working to enhance stakeholder service delivery.
  • Proactively engaging and developing positive and professional and collaborative working relationships with legal colleagues, including regional teams, business stakeholders and panel law firms.
  • Providing expert and professional legal advice, guidance and support to ensure that the legal and reputational risks are identified, reported and mitigated.
  • Identifying new legal, regulatory and market developments that may affect business activities. Ensuring key business stakeholders are fully briefed on new developments and issues arising in relevant business areas.
  • Applying the risk and control practices in your ways of working and demonstrating accountability for guiding risk management decisions and exercising good judgment.
  • Managing legal risk in accordance with group policy requirements, including implementation and provision of advice on legal and regulatory developments.
  • Delivering fair outcomes for our customers and ensuring own conduct maintains the orderly and transparent operation of financial markets.

Qualifications:

  • Thai-law qualified lawyer holding a bachelor and/or master of laws degree from a reputable university with at least 7 years of experience in corporate banking in financial sectors or international law firm.
  • Extensive legal knowledge in the areas of corporate and institutional banking including financing and trade finance, transaction bankingderivatives and securities services,.
  • Experience and legal knowledge in the areas of cash management, and services and procurement contracts is an advantage.
  • Strong lateral thinking and problem-solving skills and a growth mindset and commitment to self-development.
  • Experienced and confident practitioner, with excellent negotiation and drafting skills and having demonstrated the ability to take initiative and apply good commercial and legal judgment.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of developments (including legal and regulatory changes and industrial trends/practices) in financial services industry.
  • Ability to handle a diverse range of issues, deal with new or unexpected situations and work under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Thai languages (both written and verbal) and strong inter-personal skills.
  • A collaborative teammate who is able to establish an internal and external network, connections and/or association to add collaborative value but also a self-starter who is able to work independently with an entrepreneurial drive.
