The Role

We are pleased to announce a Senior Lecturer role based within the Newcastle Biostatistics Research Group (BRG). This is a permanent, core-funded academic position that represents an exciting opportunity to play a major role in shaping one of the UK's leading academic groups in clinical trials statistics. The successful applicant will provide leadership across a growing portfolio of applied clinical trials, develop an internationally recognised programme of research, and contribute strategically to the future direction of the Newcastle Biostatistics Research Group.

The University has developed an Academic Job Summary Guidance document which summarises the range of activities that academic colleagues may be expected to perform.

Specifically, this post-holder will collaborate on new and existing clinical trials projects led by teams within and beyond the Faculty, being fully involved in the design, funding, conduct and analysis of the work. This includes leadership and supervision of research staff and postgraduate researchers. They will also develop their own research on clinical trials methodology and contribute to and contribute to the BRG’s operational group for clinical trials.

The BRG is one of the UK's largest university-based biostatistics groups, bringing together over 30 statisticians working across clinical trials, observational studies and statistical methodology. The successful applicant will join a highly collaborative environment with close links to Newcastle Clinical Trials Unit, the NIHR Research Support Service and leading clinical researchers across multiple disease areas. The BRG has considerable strengths in both applied and methodological biostatistics research, especially in clinical trials methodology. We particularly welcome applicants with interests in innovative clinical trial methodology, including adaptive designs, Bayesian methods, platform trials or other emerging areas that complement and strengthen the BRG's existing expertise.

The BRG provides statistical teaching and supervision within the Faculty and for statistical and data science MSc programmes (including a module on Clinical Trials). At Senior Lecturer level, the post-holder will be expected to play an active role in the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate education. They will also be expected to submit and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and supervise PhD students.

We’re looking for an individual that has a track record in clinical trials research, statistical teaching and potential to play a strategic leadership role within the group. For research, they will have an impressive portfolio of research outputs, evidence of applying your research in practice, and a successful track record of funding. They will also have some experience in line managing individuals and PhD supervision. The ideal candidate will have an ambitious vision for growing their own research and teaching area within the BRG. They should be eager to lead the application of advanced methods in clinical trials, work well with others, and proactively contribute to developing our positive research culture.

The post-holder will be based in our offices on the University main campus, with the option to work remotely for up to half the week, in alignment with Newcastle University's blended working policies.
