Job Description
Senior Lecturer - Animation and Game Design
ABOUT JMC
Founded over 40 years ago, JMC is a heritage higher education provider specialising in the creative industries. We offer smaller classes, real studios with incredible equipment, and lecturers who still work in the industries they teach, from TV production to music theatre to game design.
Our positioning is direct. JMC graduates, and our staff, are working creatives and collaborators. They excel at their own craft, and they’re also exceptional team players.
We’ve been doing this for over 40 years, and we plan to keep doing it for many more. This is a place to build a career chapter, not just a CV line.
YOUR ROLE, HONESTLY
The Senior Lecturer, Animation and Game Design, is an experienced academic and active industry practitioner who plays a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of creative professionals at JMC Academy. The role combines expert teaching, leadership of unit coordination and assessment moderation, mentorship of junior academic staff, and active engagement with scholarship, creative practice and industry. Senior Lecturers lead by example in the studio and classroom, integrating current industry practice and scholarly pedagogy into teaching, championing inclusive curriculum and assessment design, and supporting positive student outcomes, satisfaction and progression across the courses to which they contribute. Beyond the classroom, the Senior Lecturer contributes to course review and development, leads or supports creative projects, showcases and discipline events, builds professional networks and live industry-engaged opportunities for students, and represents JMC Academy in professional and community forums. The role works in close partnership with the Head of Department, contributing to outreach and recruitment activities.
Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in Game Design.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Lead unit coordination, including delivery, assessment design and assessment moderation, ensuring alignment with unit learning outcomes, course standards and JMC Academy policies.
- Deliver engaging, practice-led teaching that integrates current industry practice and scholarly pedagogy, and design inclusive learning experiences aligned with unit and course outcomes.
- Coordinate units, moderation and assessment across the discipline.
- Be an active participant in unit, course and team meetings, committees and academic governance forums as required.
- Propose unit updates and contribute to course review and development cycles in collaboration with the Head of Department (and Executive Dean).
- Ensure availability outside scheduled class times for reasonable student consultation.
- Support positive student outcomes across the course locally, monitoring progression and engaging in early-intervention strategies for at-risk students.
- Improve student satisfaction through targeted initiatives and act on feedback from student evaluations, lecturer evaluations and program reviews.
- Lead or support productions, exhibitions, showcases and discipline events that demonstrate student capability and JMC’s creative culture.
- Build professional networks and develop live industry-engaged projects, including guest practitioners, masterclasses, briefs, placements and WIL opportunities.
- Support team compliance and obligations, including TEQSA / Higher Education Standards Framework, ESOS, Working with Children, WHS and JMC Academy policies and procedures.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- Tertiary qualifications relevant to the discipline at AQF Level 7 minimum (Bachelor's degree); a Master's degree or higher is highly regarded; or equivalent demonstrated industry standing in a creative discipline.
- Substantial professional / industry experience and continuing currency in a relevant area of the creative industries (animation or game design, with preference given to those with industry experience in game design).
- Proven success in higher education teaching, including unit coordination, assessment design, moderation and curriculum development.
- A track record of, or strong commitment to, scholarly activity, research or creative practice that is relevant to teaching and contributes to discipline currency.
- Active membership of relevant professional associations and engagement with industry forums, events and continuing professional development.
YOU’LL THRIVE HERE IF
- You're passionate about developing the next generation of animation and game design professionals through engaging, practice-led teaching.
- You enjoy balancing creative industry practice with academic leadership, including curriculum development, assessment and mentoring.
- You actively maintain industry connections and are excited to create real-world learning opportunities for students.
- You collaborate well with colleagues, contribute to a positive academic culture, and enjoy leading initiatives that improve courses and student outcomes.
- You're adaptable, organised and comfortable managing multiple priorities, from teaching and unit coordination to showcases, governance and industry engagement.
YOU’LL FIND IT HARDER IF
- You prefer working independently and have little interest in collaborating with colleagues, students or industry partners.
- You're not interested in keeping your industry knowledge current or integrating contemporary practice into your teaching.
- You find academic responsibilities such as assessment moderation, curriculum development and compliance frustrating or overly administrative.
- You're uncomfortable providing regular student support, feedback and mentoring outside of scheduled classes.
- You prefer predictable, narrowly defined responsibilities rather than balancing teaching, leadership, creative projects and stakeholder engagement.
