Job Description

Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.

As a Lead Control Systems engineer you will report to the Control Systems Manager.

As the successful candidate, you will be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team of engineers working on the system requirements, design & performance verification of Control and Protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes.

The development of such Control & Protection systems is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.

As a Lead Control Systems Engineer, you will be expected to model the DC system, the AC network equivalents, renewable systems ( wind parks, solar PV cells etc) in PSCAD, conversion or modelling of AC network equivalents in RSCAD and interface to the control contract equipment to validate control and protection system.

The global energy transition depends on reliable, intelligent power transmission — and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology is at the heart of it. As a Control & Protection Systems Engineer at GE Vernova's Stafford site, you'll work at the technical forefront of that challenge: modelling complex power systems, validating control and protection strategies, and ensuring that the HVDC schemes we deliver perform reliably for our customers across the world.

You'll be part of a highly motivated team of engineers working on the system requirements, design, and performance verification of Control and Protection (C&P) functions for both Line Commutated Converter (LCC) and Voltage Source Converter (VSC) HVDC schemes. The work is technically demanding, multidisciplinary, and genuinely consequential — and it offers real scope for technical leadership and continuous development.

What You'll Do

You'll play a central role across tendering, project delivery, and after-sales technical support — bringing together system modelling expertise, engineering judgement, and cross-functional collaboration.

  • Model and validate HVDC and AC network systems— develop and validate High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system models in PSCAD and Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS); convert and validate AC network equivalents in RSCAD; convert Power Systems Simulator for Engineering (PSS/E) network models to PSCAD; and model renewable AC networks including wind parks and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
  • Lead dynamic performance studies— conduct Dynamic Performance Studies (DPS) using offline and online simulation tools; support improvements to control algorithms and fault recovery strategies; and develop new control, protection, and sequencing strategies (including start-up and shutdown sequences) to meet customer technical specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership across projects— play a key role in engineering design reviews; identify potential project risks and technical weaknesses; and propose safe, reliable, and compliant solutions in line with project milestones and financial requirements.
  • Engage directly with customers— understand and communicate customer requirements; lead technical discussions and respond to clients' technical questions; and develop client relationships that support delivery confidence and long-term partnerships.
  • Drive continuous improvement— introduce tools, methods, and process improvements to raise team effectiveness; promote a standard product mindset; seek opportunities to reuse solutions and reduce delivery timelines; and ensure that Return of Experience (RoE) is captured and incorporated across projects.

Who We're Looking For

You're an experienced power systems or HVDC engineer with hands-on simulation expertise and the technical depth to lead complex studies, engage confidently with customers, and contribute meaningfully to engineering design reviews.

Required

  • A degree in Engineering — ideally covering power systems and power electronics subjects — or equivalent knowledge. A formal qualification is relevant to the depth of technical work in this role; however, we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements, and a demonstrated background in the HVDC industry will be strongly considered.
  • Hands-on experience with PSCAD and RSCAD simulation tools for HVDC and AC system modelling and validation.
  • Working knowledge of HVDC Control, Protection, and Sequencing strategy.
  • Understanding of the functional characteristics of power systems, including interactions between AC and HVDC systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create and present technical reports and respond to clients' technical questions.
  • Ability to work to project deadlines, maintaining safety, quality, and engineering integrity.
  • Willingness to travel internationally to support project delivery, with flexibility around working hours when project needs require it.

Preferred

  • Experience in the HVDC industry in a technical leadership capacity.
  • Experience or certification in process improvement or Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Ability to define, document, and validate technical requirements in line with engineering best practice.
